Jumbo's custom turbo build

We went with the headers from the Z/G because they were already coated and mated to the cross-over pipe. We used several pieces from that set-up to reduce fab time on the FX.

We used Polydyne for coatings and no, they did not coat the inside of the headers.

lol - yes! That was a type-o. Should be .032 inch gap.

Sorry for our crazy measurement system Ray! I agree with the rest of the world on this one - we should all just go metric.

I mean, why is the gap on a spark plug in inches when everything else on the Japanese import is metric?!?!? I wouldn't even know where to buy a metric gap tool around here...lol.

Here is a good reference table for Forced Induction VQ motors. I copied this out of the December 2010 issue of D-Sport magazine. Any of these should work for you.

NKG V-power, .032 gap, Nickel alloy (use: LFR6A)
NKG GP Series Platinum, .032 gap, Platinum
NKG Premium Platinum, .032 gap, Platinum with Platinum ground tip (PLFR6A)
NKG IX-Series Iridium, .032 gap, Iridium (LFR6AIX)
Pulstar Platinum, .032 gap, Platinum (dg1p)
Pulstar Iridium, .032 gap, Iridium (dg1i)

In Ontario, we have both metric and SI units. I was raised with inches, then Canada thought they would go metric, so we have a bit of both. I have spark plug gauges in both metric and inches. Children in school now are all taught in metric.

The real confusing thing is when I see mileage ratings in the US. Our galllon is bigger than the US gallon and then all our gas pumps in Canada switched to liters. I still convert back to Imperial gallons and good old inches.

Very confusing.

Lol......luckely the wheel bussines all uses Inches so i'm kinda used to the idea.

These sparks.......is that what is advised for F/I.......being the best there is.......as i can get Denso Iridium at a very good price as a company who i do bussines with has them.......

Yes - these are all specifically for a Forced Induction VQ35DE.

No mention of Denso in the Magazine but assuming you can find the equivalent part numbers I'm sure the Denso spark plugs would work just fine for you.

Lol it's crazy, man. Let's just say the Miata is helping me wait for the FX and it is doing it's job very well. I'm out in the garage almost every night working on it - for the past five weeks I've been doing what I consider to be a major overhaul and each tank of gas my mpgs keep going up. Parts of the car were in pretty bad shape but I bought it specifically to keep me busy. Quick summary of the past five weeks - say this all in one breath: new floor mats, matching arm rest, shift boot & EB Boot, shift knob, cup holder, ILM pedal set, Dynamat on both doors, used aftermarket sound system with amplified sub in trunk, repaired interior trim panels, all new silicone vacuum hoses, new radiator & hoses, water pump, master brake cylinder, crank pulley, timing belt & tensioner kit, clutch replacement kit, all new shift bushings and springs, all new gaskets and seals, brake pads all around, rattle can paint on one headlight and the bumper, charcoal canister delete, smoked signals and side markers, all fluids changed, spark plugs and wires, painted valve cover & coolant overflow reservoir, radiator cowl and I counted 56 rock chips touched up.

Got some major things ordered too. Goal is to do as much as I can before the FX is done. When the shop calls to tell me the FX is ready, I'm driving the Miata over there and leaving her with the shop while I take my FX home. Everything is just so CHEAP for the Miata. Rear rotor? $15. Full Forced induction kit with engine management? $4000. I plan to buy a used Miata engine and build it in my garage, then swap it in along with FI. I'm thinking that will take about a year or a little more.

Back to the meat and potatoes. And that's how I feel about the FX. The Miata is a purpose car, not high in utility. The FX is a house with all the amenities, the Miata is a pup tent.

The shop and I are talking about once a week now - the CHRA and turbine wheel are on order from Garrett, but there is a regional representative that supplies all the shops that can't afford to pay the $100,000 dealer designation. Garrett won't run production till that regional rep has an order size worth filling. Minimum order.

The alternative the shop offered was to replace the whole thing with the new GTX series, and sell off all my 35R gear to offset the cost. I'd still take a hit for the difference in costs which could be as much as 700 bucks. But at this point it seems like I'd be skimping in the wrong place if I did anything less. Not sure. Hopefully the parts will be in soon. The build is much less of a concern at this point (we already know it works) than the tuning. I want the shop to put some DD miles on the car, ironing out any hiccups in the maps. I expect them to have the car for a week to ten days after all the building is completely done.

Being a project manager and a guy who estimates building things for a living - I'm thinking I'll be lucky to get the car back in December, as long as the parts come in before the end of the month.

Well sounds great so far.

Like you said the miata stuff is extremely cheap. 400WHP = 10sec ride, if you can get a good launch (short wheelbase). It's good that you're keeping busy with it, sounds like you're going to turn it into a gem.

Well we'll have to have a meet when you get the FX sorted properly. I guess it'll be a celebration dinner of sorts.

Keep us updated when you can.

If Garret Still hasn't started production yet, i think you could assume that it will take a while as well.
I do not know how fast they are but also think these things will take a while.
Can't they get your parts from another region....?? I would be way to impatient to wait that long but on the other hand.....sometimes you have to......i seem to forgot my bodykit story wich took a year.......getting mad again even thinking about that

But 700,- for the GTX when already spending money on the miata would be a nice upgrade as well IMO

Good luck buddy.......very eager to here how it all goes.

Decided to stop by the shop this afternoon just to see where things are. The CHRA came in yesterday, but the exhaust manifolds have been held up at the ceramic coating place for three weeks. The shop has been calling daily and does not plan to use this particular place any longer, due to the current job load they have been waiting for.

The Koyo has been installed - here's a shot from the back side in the bay:

Since the Koyo is made for a G35, it is two inches shorter than the OEM FX radiator. This actually opens up space behind the lower half of the intercooler, which had been mounted at the bottom of the OEM radiator. Should improve cooling efficiency. The photo above is the old CHRA (between the snails). Below is the new CHRA:

I took two road debris hits over the past year that damaged the FX. The last hit took out the front sway bar and the passenger side end link. I ordered a new front sway and since my RWD did not come with a rear sway, I went ahead and ordered a rear sway bar with all the mounting hardware and end links. Those are due to be delivered to the shop tomorrow. We confirmed all the brackets already exist on my chassis and know it might take another exhaust modification to make it work.

With the addition of the sway bars to the BC coilovers, I'm having a suspension corner balance (with my weight ballast) and alignment. Ride height won't change until I get a different set of wheels. I like the look (ride height with stockers) I've got right now - subtle and pretty much stealth. Most guys don't notice the intercooler pipes in the foglight ports until they are standing in front of it.

The used engine oil was sampled and sent to a lab for analysis. Results should be back this week. Plan will be to increase the oil change interval to 8-12K miles, pending analysis results. That Rotella T6 is great stuff.

It was good to see my FX today. It has been almost three months, I think.

ha, in a lot of ways, sometimes out or sight out of mind is better, makes the waiting more bearable... I have to park right behind mine & look at it dead in the driveway every day :(

Got the oil analysis report back. Nothing unexpected. It seems the lab did not realize that this was a brand new build, but mention the numbers could be explained if that were true.
