hey guys just installed a k&n drop in today in wow im really happy with it . i could feel the lil extra power and u could hear it sucking air . gas milage is better . best $50 ive spent on the FX. i got a couple questions though . how often do u clean the filter ? it says million mile warranty but does it really last a long time ? and how much is the cleaning kit ? my bad for the kinda nooby questions . this is just my first k&n filter ive ever purchased . not familiar with them .. thanks guys

You dont need to clean it too often i do mine about every 10k but youu dont even need to do it that often. (I have the K&N cone/stillen cai)

I check mine once every month to every other month. If I see a lot of black stuff trapped in it I clean it. O and when I clean the thing, I don't use that cleaning solution they give you. It's an over priced detergent solution. I have been using hand soap and dish washer fluid with hot water and it cleans it perfectly fine

You use their oil though right, to re-oil it?

how much is there cleaning kit ? i would definatley use their oil to oil it . but i might do what mongolian said if the kit is pricey.

You dont need to spray much just enough for the hole filter to be pinkish/red. If you spray too much it can get on the MAF and cause lots of idle/throttle issues!

how many sprays gets the job done ?

I have to use like half the cleaning solution to clean my cone filter, most of the time...

So I used to go through the solution in 2 use.

On the other hand, the oil solution last pretty damn long. I think I'm still on the original can and I've purchased 3 kits from what I remember until I stopped buying the kit and started to use soap.

yea il watch for that . thanks for the info thats good to know .

Just buy the oil. There is no need to pay for pricey detergent solution

yea il try that . how do u let it dry ? do you just spray the oil right after ? and how long u let the oil dry ?

After I wash the filter, I let it dry and spray it with oil. I don't drive my car much so it just sits in the engine bay until I drive it.

I suppose it wouldn't really matter if you didn't overspray your filter. I just go around the cone and do a light layer entirely around the cone until a little hint of red.

it's a good idea after it's oiled to let it sit for a day before using it, also don't over oil it... it should be just enough to dampen it, not soaked. when it goes back into service there should be no chance of oily residue coming off of it or it will hurt the MAF sensor... a common problem...

My two cents -- if you don't dyno tune your car, the best air intake is OEM with a drop in K&N filter. Fully sealed from engine bay, MAF sensor in the position where it's made to be and flow of air where ECU can compensation accordingly.

1) Reset your ECU if you can.
http://www.technosquareinc.com/350reset.htm

It will take some practice... or you might get it on the first shot. I found it fun to do. Simply removing your negative battery cable won't do the trick.

2) Is an oiled filter bad for Nissan MAF? Yes and no. OEM nissan are paper filters and yes they have oil on them. New K&N are properly oiled, but people over oil and you can get surging problems. Easy fix, quickly spray MAF cleaner on the MAF sensor to clean away the oil.

3) Dirty K&N filter to an extent is a good thing. Helps filter more particles per website recommendations. Tiny particles can pull the oil off the filter, so if you do a lot of off-road or know the air quality is bad, I would wash the filter and re-oil more often.

4) I would go 40k-50k miles before you clean. No need to do earlier, you just wear out your filter, but your filter will outlast your car.

5) When you do re-oil, only oil the side the air comes in from. You do light coats until the side the air comes in from is a deep red and the other side is a light pink. To give an idea, my aersol oil takes 10 or so very light coats. I wait 30 minutes in between coats to give it time to absorb.

6) Put that K&N sticker on top of the box so mechanics won't mess with it and try to say your filter is dirty and give you a generic brand and install for $100.

another thing, never use compressed air to dry the filter after washing, it will ruin the fiber weave of the filter media... you need to have patience, let it dry naturally or add a little heat to help, don't oil till it's dry...

wow thanks chedman thats some good info right there. everything str8 foward .

has anyone done the ecu reset ? what does it do with the k&n ? what difference does it make ?

clean and re-oil it whenever it is no longer a red color

Sorry Jbaker, good way to judge if you need to inspect the filter, but not a surefire way of telling if the filter needs cleaning and re-oiling.

http://www.knfilters.com/instructions/17214_inst.pdf

From K&N. Step 8 -- Eventually the red color will fade but the oil will remain and filter the air.

I use a spreadsheet to track my maintenance and write down the mileage of when the filter was put in/cleaned/re-oiled.

This is especially true because I had a JWT filter and their standard is a blue die -- that fades faster than the red. Made me want to clean it earlier but it didn't need it.
