What did you do to your FX / QX70 today?

Ordered some parts and also cried a little (why does OEM cost so much! But only way to go IMO).

For VK45DE:

Valve covers, left and right.
Valve cover gaskets, left and right.
Water pump and seal (preventative).
Thermostat and gasket (preventative).
Upper and lower radiator hoses (preventative).
Serpentine belt (might as well as it's pretty much all apart).

Iridium plugs are in, just waiting for valve covers.

Installing tweeters in the car, first step for audio system build.

Mounted the Amp under the spare wheel cover ensuring it is directly in the middle so it has plenty of room and ventilation.

Amp doesn't look mounted at all in this pic and not sure what you are referring to as far as the spare wheel cover? Do you have a pic of the final product? Are you still using the stock sub?

I found a perfect place for the amp. Found this on the org. Basically, where the sirius/xm radio goes, right underneath and on top (if you don't have sat radio).

I was going to go for a big 5 channel, but going to smaller ones hidden where I can. A stealth install, leaving the spare and having everything look OEM.

Underneath the xm radio receiver is the Bose amp is. If you remove it, you can probably mount a little bigger amp than you can if you mount on top.

I probably didn't explain it clear as to the Amp location.
The stock is out. For now what I did, is I took 1 inch wooden blocks and attached them underneath the trunk liner right in the center of the spare wheel. Then I attached the amp to those blocks so there is a clearance which allows for air flow. When you lower the trunk liner, the amp lowers into the spare wheel and hangs upside down inside of it.

Took some pics now after work, sorry it's dark. Will try to take better in the morning.

You might consider flipping that amp over so that it's not upside down. It would be fairly easy to do in that location and WAY better for the amp. As it is, it will very likely overheat, and quickly.

LOL i went to the lot today to get a oil change, but found out they moved to a few miles down the street,so i followed a black fx for a little and it led me closer. Then services old me my speed sensor on one of the wheels were broken. Yay me, 125$ diagnostics and 960 for the sensor

I understand heat travel upward. Dose it really matter? The Bose amp is mounted upside down too. :confused.: Unless the Bose is special designed to be mounted upside down, but from the look the cooling veins (is that what they call them???) is pointing downward too. :wink:

It depends on the amp and how much heat it generates in its application, but it can matter a lot. I'd bet that even though the heat sinks are partially on the bottom of the bose amp that it is in fact mounted "right side up". It's not necessarily difficult to engineer a passive top mount amp, it's difficult to engineer a passive amp that can be inverted and still maintain it's cooling capacity. Passive amps (no cooling fans) rely on convection cooling, and convection cooling is uttely dependant on proper oreintation. Not only is the amp in question a passively cooled sub amp (usually high power and generating lots of heat) but it's mounted upside down in a place with absolutely zero moving air. The worst of both worlds so to speak. Much like redlining your engine every day; it's not absolutely going to blow up immediately, but it's not a very good idea. It would be easy to flip his amp over too, as it's mounting flanges are horizontal and he's already got it spaced several inches off the spare tire cover. Win-win.

I did that yestaaaaday, went out an take pics today and getting ready to put things back and start on my next proj.

I did not even think of that, I just went for a quick fix after I was done. After I took the pics I realized that this is not going to work. Appreciate all the info, always helpful to have another set of eyes take a look at it. Off to get some coffee and do some rework. :smile (2):
