iPad in the FX

panzer, I'm afraid that much weight on the clock panel will probably be enough leverage to pull the clock panel right out of the dash, don't think it's attached secure enough to support something like that. you could probably build bracketry behind the panel to secure it though...

Thanks for the advice Turbo
The ball will be mounted low as not to cause to much leverage to pull the top out (about 3-5 inches up on the curve). Im ordering everything in plastic (to keep weight down). The only thing medal is the ball that connects to the (clock plate). I have some 3M double sided tape I plan to place at the top of the piece to in effect to (wedge/stick) it in place. Most of the weight will be down low and when the pad and mount are in place the CG will not be out to far from the dash. Almost strait up and down (i do not want the mount sticking out. The pad will almost be touching the right (tune) knob for the radio. Ill take a picture of the pad where it will be mostly located. If push comes to shove ill make a bracket for the plate.

So who's going to be the first one to install iPad in the FX??

It will be nice combo internet/gps/touch screen.

ME!!:smug:

Well Its installed:wink (2): works great! Only issue is charging due to the USB is not the correct voltage to charge a iPad. You need 2V to charge a iPad. It shows "not charging" but it does trickle charge. When I take the mount out the only thing remaining is the slot for the USB and the 1" ball. to keep the ball from turning on the console I had to file a slot on the ball metal base and on the console piece. Took a picture nail and cut off the head and filed it down to a nub and used epoxy to hold it in place in the slot on the ball and dash piece then just bolted the 2 together and wedged it between the two. It acts like a cotter pin and keeps it from turning under the torque load. I'm going to get a USB port dust cover to cover the hole when the mount is not in place. And YESSS I know I need to clean the Ipad:tongue (2):

Does that thing swivel? Looks pretty cool, reminds of how cops have their laptops set up in the cruiser.. The Ipad just looks a bit too large in the space though, I would have gone with a 7" screen myself, but wow it does look pretty good... Can't even really tell where you have it mounted to.. Sweet!

I can move it in any direction. If I had a passenger on a long drive they can watch movies:wink (2):. Its not that big in person. I was going to mount vertical but I like the wide screen. But I can tilt vertical if need be.

That's cool... I hooked up an HDD media player to my rca inputs and can now watch movies, play music and look at pics while on the go.. I've got a terabyte in there :ninja:.

What you did there will definitely put you over the top.. I bet there's not that many done that way in Texas.

Covers alot of the other controls, but that's a big screen, so it's cool
What up Dave,
I rarely use the center controls. Normally Ill adjust the temp but that is about it. The ones I do use I have exposed are from the drivers seat its easy to get to.

$hit I'm the only modded FX here in El Paso. I see others (rare) but normally just wheels.

Well here is my iPad2 in my 2010

Looks good swag.. What did you use as a mount?

I still do think that a 7" tablet would look much better, but this does look cool.

how bout this?

MV-IPAD_ANI.gif

So my family's first computer was a Macintosh SE with a single 3.5 floppy. Monochrome screen, mouse, etc. My dad won that computer as a door prize during a business trip conference. After that I had a PC at college and I've never looked back. I would have agreed with turbo and tchuck if it wasn't for the fact that my parents just gave my wife and myself an iPad for our anniversary this past December. So I've had about four months with it. I fought tooth and nail to avoid iTunes at all costs. I grumbled as I registered, filled in my profile and reluctantly accepted Safari and iTunes software downloads onto my PC.

This is the 16gb wifi ONLY (no 3g). So that sort of takes out using navigation unless you have wifi in your car.

I have a Microsoft Zune which I love and it's an 80gb unit. It's a lot smaller than the iPad so I won't be using the iPad to listen to music.

For photos it is hard to beat in terms of the size and screen quality. hard to show off my FX on my smart phone, you know?

So take away two of the main features for this thing... and why do I still like it so much? We've determined that it is really a "consumer" device. Not a "productivity" device. You can stream TV, Movies, radio stations, etc to household gear quite easily, check email, read forum threads, and we havent even touched on the apps. Just because there are a million of these products out there, there is support and peripherals out the wazoo. Internationally any city you go to kind of support.

It's ten times better than a laptop to travel with in terms of size/weight. I've been stranded in airports and was able to give my kids cartoons to watch. In the last four months I have checked my email on my iPad here at home, Trinidad, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

I don't use it to send emails unless they are short - I find the on screen keyboard to be a little inconvenient. I fixed that by getting a bluetooth keyboard case for it, but prefer to just sit down at my desktop to do any emailing or thread posting. It has it's place - especially if you tailor it with the available applications. I could see a seriously sick car installation that has crazy interface applications. The quality of the interface and what you can do with it would make or break the install in the FX.

So in my case the value was there because well... I got it for free.
