horn does not work

Sold my 2003 FX35
I have not been to the forum for some time now. I decided to just drive my FX and enjoy what I have. Everytime I come back to the forum I want something new. :eeerr:

Anyrate, my horn does not work. It does not work when I press at the steering wheel. I turned the "horn beep" feature on when I lock the car. (Was not on before.) That does not work. The horn does work when I press the Panic button.

The Horn fuse (#10) checked good. As does fuse #71 The relay sounds the horn when I ground pin #1. I pulled the E9 connect in the IPDM and grounded pin 51 and the horn sounds. With the horn relay out I probe pin 1 socket. Voltage reads 3.84 VDC When I press the horn it goes to zero. With the horn relay connected with lead wires, pin one starts at 12VDC and only drops to 11.84VDC.

Do I have a grounding issue? I will not be messing with the streering wheel because I don't like the idea of acidentally setting off the air bag. But I am not sure where to look next. Before I give up and let the dealer look at it I thought I would ask here.

TIA

Horn relay.

knowing full well that a horn relay would not fix the problem, I replaced it anyway. My $10 gamble did not pay off. I think I am just going to have to take it to the dealer.

Yes, just take it to the dealer, must be the same problem with mine a few months ago with a wire near the main harness.

How much did it cost?

Do you remember how much it cost to fix? Hopefully not too much. Seems silly to spend hundreds of dollars to fix a horn. Now that it is not working I miss it. Not that I used it much but I don't have anyway to alert an errant driver.

Dealer update.

While I was dropping the car off at the dealer, he pushed the lock and unlock buttons at the same time to turn the horn chirp on when you lock the doors. The horn did work. I turned the horn chirp on thru the display but I guess that does not do the trick.

So he call me later and says that there is a short between the ipdm and another module and it will cost $1100 to replace the wire harness! I asked if they could repair the harness. He said they can not?

If everything else works fine except the horn, can't they figure out which wire to replace? I guess I will just have to figure it out myself?

Holy mf......$1100 to fix the horn?

Sorry to tell you, but S. Bay Infiniti hooked it up for an unbelievable price. It was less than $100 and gave me loaner car for over a day.

Fixed it!

I fixed my horn by wiring it direct to the relay. It took about two hours. It cost about $20. I had to buy 50 wire taps when I needed only 2.

Now I am going to see how long before I actually need to use it.

Hey SilverFX,

I have this same problem, and I'm really glad I found this thread. I've checked the relay and fuse, and also the spiral cable.. they're all good. So I'm guessing my situation is exactly like yours was, and I want to repair my wire too. Can you tell me more specifics of where the wire was damaged, and where you put in the wire taps? Did you have to run a wire across the firewall?

Was the original wire damaged at a connector? a splice point? Was the wire sky blue, or green/black?

Thanks in advance for your help!

No damage found

I could not find damage to the original wire.

I just ran a new one. The Green/black is on the back of the steering column. and the sky blue is below the horn relay. I ran the new wire behind the center stack of the IP and then thru the firewall right by the right speaker.

First I tested the horn button by running the wire from the connector on the back of the steering coloun to the horn relay. (Of coarse, I hooked more then once for the satisfaction of knowing I could fix it myself.)

I had to remove about ten trim pieces and the glove box too. If you need to replace your air filter now would be a good time. It is right behind the glove box.

Do you have a manual? I found one online about three years ago. I don't have a link anymore.

I fixed my horn by doing the same thing that SilverFX did.

Thanks for your posts SilverFX. I feel safer on the roads now! =)
