Rusty rotor edges

What can be done to eliminate the rust on the edges of rotors? I tried painting them but eventually it just came off and turned rusty again.

Try sanding it off, then a layer of grease. You'll run the risk of getting the grease on the rotor surface though, which will have adverse side-effects on your stopping ability temporarily, and possibly gunk up slots or drilled holes in the rotor.

I'm thinking a VERY thin layer of a thicker grease would do the trick though.

If I was to try this out, though, I'd only do 1 rotor and see how it works, look for any sign of the grease touching the brake surface of the rotor, etc.

i am considering the same thing. i got new wheels and they really show the back rotor and hub. the rotors are new, but i can already see some rust forming. i plan on getting some high temp spray paint, and sanding and painting the hub on the rotor. hopefully that helps.

cadmium coating is your best bet to last the longest over zinc. I've only seen this done on new rotors, so can't help you where you can get this done.

I wash my car and my rotors are all brownish already from the water. One quick spin and the pads clean it off, but not all the parts like you mention and the rotor still looks "rusty".

What type of paint did you use? It would need to be high temp - maybe a caliper paint or engine enamel - look for 1000 degree plus. Definitely need to remove all corrosion before applying the paint. Just like most paint jobs, preparation is key.

My Stoptech rotors have a black enamel on the edges and inside the rotor on the vanes that has held since I got them. No rust anywhere on these rotors.

I got Posi-Queits on the rears I just did and notice the pad does not 'wipe' the complete rotor face and it gets the rusty look all the time. the rest of the rotor is black and has no problems. nay one else? may I should go back to the stock pad?

IMO, the posiQuiets kinda suck. Since my rotors have been exposed to a new england winter and are starting to show rust (not too bad), I might just get a whole new set for the spring. They are cheap from rotopros. I figure why not.

Next time around though, I dont think I will be going with the posiQuiets. When I put those on with the cross drilled slotted rotors, I noticed that the stock set up had better stopping power. I will prob try another type of pad this next time. Any suggestions?

hey what i did last weekend was when i replaced the rear rotors, i started to notice surface rust within days on the hub. the hub is really visible with the rims i have, so i wanted to do something about it. i took the rotors off, got 280 grit sandpaper, and sanded the whole hub and small ring on the disk where the pads dont touch. i then got some electrical tape, because you can "stretch" it to conform to the circle perfectly, and taped off the disk around the small lip that isnt hit by the pads. then i covered the rest of the disk with masking tape. i bought some black 1000 degree paint at kragen, which was made for bbq grills and stoves. i sprayed the hub and ring and let it dry for an hour. it has been one week, and i havent gotten any nicks, scrapes or chips in the hubs. it looks way better and i think it is pretty protected back there from rocks, etc. i even saw a new corvette that had nice rims but rusty rotor hubs and it looked like crap. i recommend to anyone that can really see that back hub!!

I had a guy with a z that I did a bbk conversion for & he was really worried about the rust ring too, so I sanded & painted it with high heat engine enamel from the local auto parts store... figured it'd be ok, but a month later it was peeling & rusted anyway... I told him to let it rust a bit & then we'll go over it with por-15... por-15 is extremely durable & adheres to rust extremely well, so I'm hoping that might do it. my own rotors have aluminum hats so that part stays ok, but the rust ring still develops on the disc's themselves... honestly it doesn't bother me though, I mean to me certain things are supposed to rust & this is one of them I guess. maybe it don't bother me because the bbk looks so hot that the rust ring doesn't hurt the look much I guess?

what is por-15?

and im hoping the paint will help keep moisture out and keep the rust from ever developing. i guess we will see..........

i've been noticing that my hubs in the back are having some rust whereas the front doesn't. I don't understand why the back ones will and not the front?

Anyways, what are the consequences of having the hubs rusty like that? If there are no big consequences i dont mind because my stock wheels covers them (and i ride them in the summer). During winter i use aftermarket wheels and most of the time its full of dirt and snow anyways...

What about that rust converter stuff? Spray it on rust and it turns rust into what looks like black paint?

I remember using it on the rusty steel spring for the hood latch...
