Faded Window Trim Repair

You are right. Only the 06-08 45 came with the chrome trim. It was never a factory option for the 35 for the first gens.

That explains why I have seen some 06-08 FXs with chrome trim and some with out. I was thinking that some owners of pre-06 FX45s with black trim have just bought late model wheels and put them on their older FX45s. I did not know that the 06-08 FX35s came with black trim only. Then again FXs are rare in my area, so I do not get to see many to compare besides looking at the wheels while driving by on the street.

So I want to wrap my window trim (all around the window). Mine is also faded and cracked badly. I see that the top can simply be pealed off to reveal a chrome layer underneath. Does the bottom piece need to be peeled off too? Or sanded? It seems that something needs to be done before wrapping it. Someone mentioned sanding it, but I don't think I saw anything conclusive. Also, has anyone fixed the side mirror paint? Those are also faded badly on mine (TX heat!). Has anyone tried wrapping them??

I had mine wrapped a year and a half ago without any sanding. It is still standing strong... no peeling at all. I would imagine you'd need to sand yours if it looks like the one a few pages back, but mine wasn't a peeley to begin with.

I am planning to wrap mine soon. I have the film in my garage, just need to go get a heat gun. If the surface is uneven I think you would need to peel it. My surface is fine, so I will just go over it with the wrap. Zebra has his whole car wrapped, so he can probably say on the mirrors, but It seems you can wrap about anything.

No sanding is need it, if the surface is flat. No primer is need it. Just wipe it with alcohol and you good to go.

Mirrors can be wrapped but is time consuming. If you're planning on just a black wrap or any other solid color then it will take less time than if going with CF wrap, so you can maintain the even lines in the cf without making it look over stretched or uneven.

Anything can be wrapped ;)) just takes some patience and time.

But the finish and texture would be off. It would look like the rubber they use on econo-cars.

Plasti dip would also work

Yeah, the mirrors are irritating. I wrapped mine in black brushed and it took a lot of work to keep the pattern intact while stretching. I use primer on everything that's curved and it pretty much is all the surface prep needed. Sanding would probably make the surface worse.

Glossifier still looks questionable. So many people dip their trim and then immediately rip it off and wrap in vinyl. Happens all the time on other forums when they're trying to black out their chrome trim.

I did the plasti dip with glossifier. It took a couple of tries to get it decent looking. I'm curious to know how you wrap the window trim. Do you remove all of the pieces? If so, do the clips break?

The window trim is indeed a pretty large pain in the ass to remove, I certainly broke a few of the clips, although once you take off the first two the others become easier as you kinda learn a little.

Unfortunately for me I bent on of the belt moldings at the base of the window, costed me $100 for a new piece...

You can wrap the trim without removal, with the right squeegee and slowly going around it can be nicely tucked around and under.

Get a chizler? Not sure how it's spelled, but it's basically a small piece of plastic with different rounded corners that can tuck vinyl behind things. A normal squeegee is too big to get detail work done. This one you can slide between panels to tuck the vinyl. That's what I used to do mine and it's been over 2 years now. Don't remove the trim unless you're having it professionally painted or something.

Correct Shadow, I couldn't remember the name either so squeegee was the closer. It's like an edger, I will take pic of it, looks like a plastic spatula with different "blade" thickness all around, then there is a "tucker" which is like a long stick with both ends thinned out to work corners and such.
Nearly same tools used for window tinting.

So in my limited experience with wrapping it seems that unless you clean the edge really well and/or use the wrap adhesive, it will peel up around the edges. Have you had that problem? Or were you able to prep the edges underneath the trim?

You definitely want to use a good primer, that will promote the adhesion of the vinyl, also vinyl does shrink/stretch depending on the weather and temperature so this will prevent peeling/coming off. If you do that you shouldn't have any problems.

So I finally applied the vinyl on my trim, I think I will end up doing it again with a lighter color. I was hoping it would match the sport tails, but this is way too dark.

This vinyl is from vivid. Seems like their stuff does not like to stretch. I had to cut a curved piece for the front and back window trim.
