Faded Window Trim Repair

Thanks. Yeah, hand sanded. Hand sanding isn’t to bad. You may want to tape up your fingers to prevent blisters.

I guess I’m used to the pin-stripe with the one imperfection. lol I don’t seem to notice it any longer.

3M actually makes a pinstripe eraser! I used it on my laser red with stunning ease.

But to stay on topic... I did the lower trim sanding thing too on my Silver FX. But I didnt need to paint - I just sanded off the cracking clear laminate and polished the black finish. All by hand, once things were masked off. 800 grit, scotchbrite, and Meguire's ScratchX polish, followed by a trim dressing.

Looks good! It looks like there are many ways to skin this cat. LOL.

I gotta look into that pinstripe eraser. Thanks for the information.

2006 Infiniti FX35. It looks like chrome is underneath the black vinyl above AND below the windows both front AND rear (See 1st pic). So looks like I'll be peeling the cracking trim off. How did you folks peel the trim off? The first peel off was easy but to do more looks a bit of a tough go.

How did you guys clean up the rough edges (2nd pic)?

Actually, for the rear lower trim it looks tricky. I have to unpeel the vinyl only to a point where it meets the other black trim going directly up against a window. I'd use a razor blade but that could really scratch things up but otherwise some sharp yet soft plastic tool...? Like cell phone priers.

Masked it all off and sanded it. My previous couple of post explain what I did. The lower trim is not as easy as the top. Once it’s sanded it looks like brushed nickel. I tried a heat gun without any success. Razor blade got the top trim stripped but glue residue needed to be sanded. Started with 300 grit up to 600 wetsanded.

Oh! I didn't connect that you ended with black still. I'm going to try to aim for the chrome finish. Maybe it will look good or I will get a wrap on it like you.

I was just dumbly jokingj aboutathe pinstripe. Different stripes for different... uh, folks. Nope, I didn't get it to rhyme.

Great ideas on this thread! Unfortunately they all look time consuming lol. I started peeling away at my uppers, but certain parts started to get tougher as I couldn't get a clean peel. Maybe I'll just get some window vent visors to cover them up for now. Bottoms have cracks, but not so bad that I can't live with them for now. Ultimately would like to have them wrapped at some point.
