Paddle Shifters

Impressive. So tell me. If anyone wanted to get this done through you how would this work?

I would love to have this on my FX. It takes me back to my Audi Days with my A8

yep ... I hope you can help Humberto out, so he doesn't have to get rid of his Fx. GREAT JOB btw, looks like stock.

Looks very very cool turbo! Can you fly over to socal and do these mods =).

As for linking to the org I don't see why not and the picture uploading I'm not sure what the max limit is but Jeff should be able to answer that.
I actually have not set any limits yet on max uploading. I will only set limits if necessary....... anyways nice pics.

ok, so can I link these pictures there? I tried but it don't work, just shows as the text,
instead of a photo, seems more like an issue on there end though maybe???

I tried that, it's strange, I tried in the same post even a link to a picture here & a link to a picture on mp3car, the other works but this one just shows as
, not even a red x box or one of those pictures that some sites use.. actually I think the org does that, you just get a "don't steal bandwidth" type sign

if I can't show images from here that's fine, I'm not complaining or anything, just want to know if it's that or not.., I tried to put up a link to this thread, but it can't be viewed unless there signed up?... why would you do that? I guess the thoughts is that people might be forced to sign up, but I would think the majority just click away & that's it, I would think it would be better to let them see the content, add hits & visitors viewing, that would bring new members... don't mean to but in or complain or offend anyone at all, sorry if it seems like that, just trying to help & figure out what I can & can't do is all:wub:

but then, come to think of it, I know I've viewed threads here before I signed up too... hmm now i'm confused:tongue:

none of my pictures I put here would show there...I just deleted some other pictures there to put some up there...

I thought I'd be able to put this in today, but just not enough time, hope to have results by monday, can't wait to really try it:smile:

so, whats the best valve body upgrade? also, aside from that, a cooler & a converter, what else could be done to beef up the tranny?

There is also LVL10 tranny upgrade kit with higher friction clutch packs. rookie has had it done and seems to like it. Other then that there is no other I can think of.

As for the VB upgrade there are a few to choose from, stillen, forged internals. SGP and lvl10. They vary from soft to very hard shifts. I think for NA vehicles, lvl10 and stillen would be the best choice as they aren't too hard. But if you have FI then any of them can work and I believe SGP has the hardest shifts.

I think I'll do just the vb for now, I'd love to do some sort of fi, looking around... I still have some questions that I need to figure out before I make a decission there

I saw the sgp valve body is like $700+, are they all around the same?

well, I put it in & wired it up tonight...

wow, it works cool... at first it's just the novelty of it, but once you get comfortable with it, it really is nice... enter a turn & knock the left one 2 times... engine braking & come out of the curve reving nice & pulling hard, ready for the right tap... I really like it
biggrin.gif
saves a lot of braking & will help avoid brake fade when pushing it around hard by engine braking too, I love downshifting it
smile.gif
would sound wiked with an exhaust & intake too I think...

shifting in turns is really easy too, I mean I'm not talking dukes of hazard style hand over hand driving, at speed your only turning the wheel a little & even in tight manuvers it's easy to get used to it real quick. the steering in the fx is really responsive & quick, so your hands are never really out of range unless your pulling a u-turn, but I normally don't shift when making u-turns
smile.gif

up until now I never really paid much attention to the tach, I mean I glanced at it a few times to see what she cruized at a few times maybe, but now the tach has a definate use
biggrin.gif
after a while it's in your pereferal, & use it to shift too...

everything is pretty safe, I mean between the rev limiters & computer protecting from too violent shifts, you really can't hurt much, but it does make beating it alot more fun
biggrin.gif
can't wait to uprade the valve body now

the circuit I built does exactly what the shifter does, only need 2 relays...

the circuit connects to the unified meter/ ac control module, which is mounted in the radio stack on 03-05's anyway... I haven't looked at digrams for the 06+, but should be similar.

the relay wiring I used is a double pass thru relay setup, & the stock shifter also functions right thru it, I was switching between the 2 & using them in combination without issues. each relay brakes the manual trigger momentarily & sends the shift pulse, exactly the same way the shifter works. the circiut is fed by the manual trigger. means it does nothing when not in manual mode.

the hard part of installing this is 2 things, the steering wheel needs to be pulled & the radio needs to be pulled. any competent mechanic should be able to install it no problem, if you can pull the wheel & pull the radio you can install this.

as far as the fabrication I don't know, I mean I think people can do this, but that part might be a little intimidating I guess. I'll make up a good pdf guide of the whole project with detailed instuctions, but if anyone really wanted me to make a kit that is all prefabbed & just needs to be installed I could do the whole kit for maybe around $550 or so with all new parts... this would come with relays soldered into color coded harnesses, ready to bolt in & go as it is now, but I havent tyaken into account the relocation of the power tilt button yet really... it looks like I can mount it in the lower cover, but then that would be up to you too do or I'd have to find out what that costs if I was to include that too...

don't know how many would want to spend that much though... again, you can do it yourself for under $200 with your own parts if you can afford the down time, new parts means no down time, I haven't mentioned this anywhere else but here so far, & I couldn't do too many at the same time really, but it would be better to do a few at the same time rather than one at a time too...

That is pretty cool turbo! I will have to really think bout this. But I also want to know what you intend to do with the relocation of the power tilt button.

This is awesome mod turbocad. Props to you! I'll have to read your write up on this. Then decided if I'm capable of doing this mod myself. VB and this mod goes hand in hand.

I've been using this the past few days & it's friggin awesome... coming round the curve & hit a little traffic drop to third, ,then nail it on the straight & upshift... passing is cool, nail the throttle half way & downshift & your off... hard to explain but it really is so cool... since you can keep the engine in the upper rpm range it feels even faster & more agile, now I just wish it sounded like a ruff turbo

when I first built this I wanted to really make sure that above all it wouldn't interfere with the normal driving of it, so I made sure that the paddles were as far back as they could be, with just enough clearance to pull the highbeam or the washer squirter, but I left no extra past that. now in use, I find that I run my fingers along the perimeter of the paddles as I drive, & I was a little unsatisfied with the clearance between the paddles & the stalks because I couldn't run my finger behind the padlle past the storks without my fingers having to squeeze past the stalk. I realize that I do have room to bring the paddles slightly more forward, just a few mm's really, but enough to run my fingers behind the paddle without any interfearance from the stalks to my fingers.

then, with some more use, I learned that the position of my hand on the wheel affects my reach, I'm now pretty used to & comfortable with holding the wheel in away that my fingertips glide the edges of the paddles as I steer, & with just my fingertips riding the edges of the paddles I have no issue with the clearance being to tight, just got used to it. in the end I think I'll add a travel adjustment to mine just to really fine tune the position I want exactly... I mean it's good now really, but just like adjusting the seat & adjusting the tilt telescopic wheel adds to your comfort, so will this minor adjustment. any futue ones of these I will modify my self instructions to set the clearance at a few mm's more, & then this adjustment isn't really necissary, that's about the perfect position really.

the power tilt knob winded up not being a problem, I relocated it to the lower cover, no extending wires or nothing, it reaches. all I had to do was cut a square hole & pop the switch in... the fit wasn't perfect so I added a little hot glue from behind just to keep the visable edge flat... the spot I relocated it to isn't perfectly flat as this switch is designed for, & the lower seam of the switch is slightly open like the switch isn't sitting flush on that edge... there is no way to really see this installed unless you put the back of your head to the floormat & look up, so I figure it's ok as is, I will put a small bead of silicone to fill the slight gap so even if you do look undernieth it'll be clean & perfect looking, but it's not too critical really where it is ... I do still need to add a block off plate for the old hole...

so, after using this for a while I'm hooked, this is an awesome mod & 100% sucessful, it's so intuative after a while that today, I had to drive my friends car, & I kept finding myself feeling for the edges of the paddles that weren't there. shifting with the console shifter is barbaric & a hastle, seems like work & I never enjoyed it, tried it once or twice & then pretty much ignored it, but shifting with your fingertips is just too nice to even discribe, & the computer assisted auto downshifts at a stop & the protection of not letting you downshift if the rpm's would be to high are a super nice addition & a lot better than if this was really just a 100% mechanical actuation like with solinoids or something, I can't tell you how happy I am with this mod & I'd encourage anyone to do this, adding a valve body & an exhaust will only make this that much better, but even without it it's real sweet

I'll try to write up detailed instuctions to build this soon, I ordered another set & I'm going to build another one, I'll document that one well with exact measurements & stuff, using my first build as a reference. everything fits perfect & there is minimal trimming involved, but everything has to be in exactly the right place to make this happen, a little off & the covers will be a problem & the retract & extend of the wheel will be affected, I want good clear instructions so no one screws theres up
