Hi all. Gearing up to swap the FX50 style Akebono caliper/rotor set up on my '12 FX35 LE.

I already have purchased the calipers from a '13 G37s, the Z23 PowerStop rotor & pad kit as well as the SS brake lines from Stop Tech.
A few questions...doing searches there is no real clear answer....

Dust shields....
  • Will the stock front FX35 shields clear the larger 14" rotors or will the lip have to be cut off?---CONFIRMED FX35 & FX50 for 2102 share the same front shields (41161-1EX0A LF & 41151-1EX0A RF)
  • I'm 99% sure that the rear shield lips must be cut off-- CONFIRMED FX35 & FX50 DO NOT share the same shields & must be trimmed
Brake hoses...
  • The stock FX50 uses hard lines to connect to the Akebono calipers. Using the SS braided StopTech hoses require the use of a banjo bolt...do these bolts with the brass washers now bolt in place of the metal hard lines in the rear of the caliper or is there an adapter of some sort needed? Any pics of the connection on your SS lines?--CONFIRMED you can use the SS or stock banjo type connection with the Akebono's
Banjo Bolts....
  • I have read conflicting stories from some users that the bolts that come with the SS braided hoses are too long....some say they work perfectly. Most sat the stock bolts are too long as well. Do you have to "cut" these bolts?---So far it seems hit or miss... 2 bolts in one of the package were 2 different sizes....too long. Ordered all 4 from Concept Z Performance...shorter length
Rim clearance on factory 21" LE Turbine's...
  • I did get an answer to this question from member RipNFX...he stated the 21" Turbines will clear the Akebono's no problem...no spacers needed. This is for future searchers...--seems like this video is proof that the Turbines WILL fit...
  • Also confirmed using Concept Z's templates... (not my pic or wheel...this is from their website)

Spare Tire....
  • The stock FX35 spare (that I have even with my factory 21" Turbines) wont work on the front but probably should on the rear using the templates

Thanks for the help!!

Front shields will clear because there is no "lip" that surround the side of the rotor. The rear must be cut off because it is not completely flat and has the lip going all the way around the rotor. I don't know if StopTech updated the part number for the FX35 Akebono BBK conversion SS lines. I'm sure someone or a vendor will chime in.

On my '12 there is a lip on the front but it seems like it is far enough away from the current rotors that it will clear the 1" larger 14" FX50 rotors.

My akebono calipers cleared my 20" rims so I'm pretty sure it will clear the 21" turbine wheels

With regards to the banjo bolts, there are 2 different lengths. The stock ones are too long, but IIRC, the ones that come with the braided lines are shorter. It's still too long, but I think I took off a tiny bit with a file and it worked.

Now thinking back, I actually did purchased new bolts (it's been 3 years so recollection is hazy). But I still had to file the end for some reason because the bolt bottomed out and I'm pretty sure the ones I purchased were the same length as what Stoptech sent with the lines but shorter than OEM. Maybe the washer I had was slightly thinner.

I just got my used set of calipers off eBay today and holy hell the fronts are HUGE!
I was thinking of painting the calipers another color (possibly gold or orange) but looking at the stock silver I think that will do just fine

I didnt get the SS lines in yet...when I get them Ill report back if the bolts are too long...

How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking? I just bought a new set on eBay the other day.

Also, how many of those banjo bolts are needed total?

Pretty much stole them...( the reason why I pulled the trigger on the upgrade)...$368 shipped to my door for the set...taken off a '13 G37s
PS---I was watching the set you got (I think the same one)....the set for $800 you got a sweet deal as well!

Oh wow, I didn't see those. Great deal!
I did see a parts house in NY had a front pair for like ~$300 and then a single rear for cheap.

Yeah, I grabbed the set for $800 after he dropped them for the one day sale. Not bad for brand new plus hardware. It also included pads, but searching that part number gave me a ton of different answers... one site said they were OEM for those Akebono calipers and another said they were the pads for the lower OEM brakes. Either way, I'll likely sell the pads for cheap to get rid of them and just buy something else, so I didn't mind $800 for the calipers and hardware.

So if I get the SS lines, I'll need 1 banjo per caliper. Is that front and rear I'm assuming, four total?

Yes 1per caliper. Gonna wait till I get my lines to see if I need the other bolts

Well today I got the front set of SS lines from Stoptech & test fitted the bolts....one seemed like it would work where the other was too long! Got out the digital caliper & measured both. One was 28.95mm and the other was 29.25mm overall! Maybe I got an old set of lines? Date on package was 11/4/14...
I basically said screw it & ponied up the extra $22 for the 4 bolts from Concept Z Performance...thanks for the link.
