Worth it to modify?

You guy's know these cars better than anyone, in your honest opinion, is it completely stupid to sink upwards of $6k in mods on an 07 FX35 with 80k miles?

It's been my wife's car for the last 6 years, so although it needs some tlc, it's not in bad shape. Based off what I found online, if I sold it I could probably get less than $12k, so I'd be investing almost 50% of the car's value in modifications.

I have no idea what goes first or if there's something these car's are known to have problems with after a certain age that would be different than other makes? I just did all new premium pads and rotors as well as rear calipers.

Well the exhaust is going to need replaced, it's already had the rear flange portion replaced twice and now the flex sections are going.

I plan on replacing some of the worn suspension parts and adding lowering springs. Then just normal stuff like wheels, tint, headlights and a friend is going to vinyl wrap the car for half price to help hide 9 years worth of use.
 
It all depends on how long you plan on keeping the car. If it has no major issues (engine, suspension, other mechanical/electonic) and you want to keep it for another 3-5yrs I say go for the mods, otherwise sell and use it towards your next ride.

What other options (vehicles) have you considered purchasing if you let this one go?
 
I already have a heavily modified Ford Fusion, I know people think Fusion is a boring car, but this has over $10k in mods including upgraded turbo, full body kit, coilovers and much more. We already bought a new Volvo XC60 T6 2 weeks ago to replace the Infiniti.

If the Infiniti will make it to or close to 120k miles than I would invest the money. I do not drive my vehicle often, the Fusion is a 2013 and has 9k miles on it.
 
since you already know about the world of turbo etc the answer as far as engine is NO unless you are doing forced induction on the FX35.
The answer in general is - every car is worth it to modify if you want to modify it.... however,

I had an 05 FX35 and spent the money on almost every bolt-on you could get. barely nets you any power for the price you spend. If you want to make power, either go all out and do forced induction, or just throw on an exhaust and call it a day. NOT WORTH buying a few bolt ons here and there.

This has been discussed quite a few times - there are a handful of FX35 that are making some great numbers (700hp+) and a ton of them running mid 4-500s with a more tame forced induction kit.

You really need to ask yourself what you want

Id say its worth it, as long as all maintenace has been done up to date. If anything youd probably need valve cover gaskets & miscellanious stuff that comes with age & wear & tear.
 
Doesn't sound like you want to do anything to the engine, you just want to revive the car a bit so you can keep/use it.

THe engine and trans will last a long time. THere are plenty of people on here with 150k+ miles on their FX's.

If you have the room, and want a spare car to drive instead of your fusion, then yes I'd say it's worth it to grab an exhaust, some wheels, lowering springs, etc. and make it something you want to drive.
 
Thank you for the help. Yea as far as bolt ons, I'd probably just do an exhaust only for the sound benefit and since the stock system is crap.

I just want to make it look like something I'd want to drive everyday, always said stock even when it's a good looking vehicle like the FX is still boring.

I do appreciate all the help, I'm just trying to convince my wife the car's not going to blow up next month. That's a difficult task when she is the type to throw it in the junkyard over squeaky brakes! Haha
 
Your $6K budget seems to be for maintenance work that just happens to be mods. So the decision isn't whether or not to mod, it's whether or not to spend a bunch of money to maintain the car. It's a different decision and easier to make. If you plan to keep it, it's probably worth it. If you don't want to keep it, probably not. But stuff like suspension and brake replacements would probably have to happen even if you were to sell it unless you wanted to take a huge hit.
