Hey folks, I have been browsing the forum for months now, and I keep seeing references to people using winter tires, and summer tires. I was hoping for some clarity. I live in California, and have "all weather" tires on my FX. What is the point of winter tires vs summer tires? Also, do you have different rims for each? Please explain to a noob.

Many of us have a set of wheels and tires for winter use, because All Season tires are not much good in lots of snow and ice. Therefore we use a set of winter tires that are made for below freezing conditions, they provide excellent traction in snow and ice. These winter tires wear extremely fast if used in warmer temperatures and do not perform well in hot weather, so we have a set for both conditions.
I orderered my FX with the stock 18s which I put the winter tires on, then I run aftermarket 20s with my summer tires installed.
Which part of California do you live in? "All weather" or all season tires are only useful for light snow and ice. It's always recommended to get dedicated winter tires if your situation permits. Personally, I will have a dedicated summer set and will use winter tires on my OEM wheels next winter season.

If you don't travel to snowy areas very often being in So Cal you would probably be fine with one set of wheels with all seasons. The Hankook RH06's do pretty good in the snow for all season tires and are good overall tires.

as much as all seasons are a compromise in the winter, they are also a pretty big compromise in the summer too, a dedicated summer high performance tire will handle much better than any all season, so it comes down to either one tire as "jack of all trades, but master of none", vs 2 sets that will perform better at each respective task... & also share the wear load between the 2 sets...
+1. Also, the compound in the winter tire is different. It will not harden as much once the temp get below 7C, so you will retain the grip with your winter tire in winter.
Normally, people have their oem wheels with winter tires and their aftermarket one with summer tires.
