On our '06 FX45 when we turn on the windshield defroster we get a steady LOUD clicking from somewhere under the dash near the center of the windshield. When car is running, the click is fast and steady. When car is off but in acc position, the click is still LOUD but is a slower tempo and turning it on and off several times will sometimes get it to operate without the clicking. The click rate and volume is independent of fan speed but does seem dependent on voltage (14v running vs 12v battery). This sure sounds like a relay issue to me but I don't know that much about car electronics. There are no other fan or HVAC abnormalities. I'd be grateful for any help!
