When will an FX design change be coming?

A design change will likely come in mid 2015 as a 2016 model.

EDIT: This is my best guess at a time frame, if this is to come true we should see atleast a few leaks of the new model surface before fall of this year.

You're right there will be no FX redesign until mid 2015 as a 2016 model.

Lately Infiniti has been increasing their model year lengths. It use to be 5-6 years now it's 7+ tears. Just look at the G37 coupe. It's production was suppose to end late last year. Now Infiniti announced that it will stay into production until 2015. It came out early 2007 as a 2008 model so that's a 7 year run.

The FX was redesigned in 2009 so 2016 will most likely be it or 2017 the latest. They just added the 3.7 engine in 2013 so they probably plan on keeping this out for a while.

If no change in the design, what about some new exterior and/or interior colors for a change? My first FX-50 was Beryllium with an orange/black interior. It really had the "wow" factor and everyone commented on the look.

What about a nice dark metallic green exterior with light beige or java interior, or a maroon or tan/bronze exterior with the same choice of interior - anything other than the same colors over and over.

My present 2011 silver FX35 has a charcoal interior and in looking at most in-stock exterior choices the dealers seem to favor the charcoal interior. While I like this interior as it goes well with silver, would prefer some other choices for a change. In 2011 my wife bought a new M37X in liquid platinum and almost all stock models in that color had the same charcoal interior. The dealer finally found one with a very attractive wheat interior, but had to drive all the way from Pittsburgh to Virginia to get one. Are my wife and I the only ones that want something different? We were at the Cleveland auto show yesterday and many color choices and interiors are offered by competitors. Perhaps Infiniti should think about offering some additional color and interior choices, especially if a new design change is several years away. Just an idea........

They could use some additional colors. The first gen had a fire truck red, which I was not really a fan of. And they had the bright copper. I liked it, but thought it could have been a little darker, like 1 or 2 shades. I would like to see a metallic brown, and they have it with the Midnight Mocha. However, I have never seen one. Ever. Are dealers just not buying them to sell? The Malbec Black is not for me; looks too purple. But I agree with needing a broader spectrum. My first FX was a first gen in Diamond Graphite, and my current one is a 2010 in Liquid Platinum. I test drove a 2011 in Black, and I almost grabbed it. But I've had black cars, and they need too much of my time to stay clean.

Still waiting for a updated FX35

If Infiniti doesn't at least come up with some new paint color and interior color choices they might find that many of their loyal FX customers have moved on. I took a 2014 Lincoln MKX (SUV) for a test yesterday. The car was beautiful - the interior was more than outstanding in a nice cream leather with beautiful wood accents, but the car rode like a pickup truck as compared to my 2011 FX35. I drove some GM SUVs and they rode and handled about the same. (Not that the new pickups don't ride good, but none have the feel and handling properties of an FX). I am in the market for a new SUV or crossover and am still looking, and since Infiniti has made no updates since my 2011, why trade? I like an interior that is not black or charcoal - but never see any. My first FX45 in 2003 had an orange and black interior that really had the wow factor and I don't see anything close any more. It is now over 10 years with an FX for me and I am looking elsewhere now - this doesn't make sense. Color choices are about the same - white, black, charcoal, etc. - nothing exciting. Are the dealers ordering ho-hum colors and interiors, or are there no other options?

I mentioned in an earlier post that I put a deposit on a new 2014 FX earlier this year and on the way home, my wife asked if I was excited about the new purchase. I said "No - I am not at all excited" and mentioned that even the interior (black) was the same and they had nothing with another choice of interior. I was going from my present silver exterior to a charcoal and it looked nice, but once inside the car it was the same old thing. After sleeping on it, called the dealer the next morning and cancelled the order. I have been looking elsewhere since and hoping that Infiniti would have announced at least some new colors and interiors at the big Cleveland auto show in March, but this didn't happen. I am not sure if I want to wait until 2016 or 2017 (or ??) for something new. Here I am a 10-year satisfied Infiniti FX customer who is ready to buy, but cannot do so due to such limited options. I cannot possibly be the only person who feels like this can I??

More of a concern for me is that the FX (or QX70?) is no longer a hot number for Infiniti - I just did an Internet search in eastern Ohio and western PA and there are few in stock anywhere. To me, I get the feeling that the FX is going to be phased out very soon. I guess the JX has been a good item of late, but I do not like the car - nothing can compare to an FX and I have had them continually since my first FX45 in 2003. Dropping the FX name is another thing - regardless of whatever Infiniti names the car, it will always be an FX for me. Why auto manufacturers are all using numbers and letters instead of some actual names is a big mistake. They spend millions in development and design and then cannot come up with some clever names. The commercials seem to be improving however, but if they could tie in the commercials with some interesting names they might be surprised with the results.

Thanks for the quick replies - I am so happy with my silver 2011 FX. Thinking about a future redesign, was wondering how it could be possible to improve on the overall design of the car; and when the time comes, would not expect major changes.

Last week my wife and I went to the Cleveland Auto Show to see what was being offered by the competition. We looked at Lincoln, Cadillac, Buick, Lexus and Mercedes SUVs. All were nice cars, but as soon as I got home, I called our Infiniti dealer in Monroeville, PA and scheduled a complete service, and maybe a new set of tires (my car has 23,000 miles). I plan to keep the car at least one more year - maybe two.

My first FX was a Beryllium FX45 in 2003; and both my wife and I have been Infiniti owners since. So far our only expense was a new battery for my wife's M37X last year, and new key fobs batteries ($3 each). During the period from 2003 throough 2013 that was it - no problems of any kind! It is kind of hard to look much for another brand with that kind of service. We just wish there was a dealership closer to home. Our closest dealers are in Cleveland, Akron/Canton and Monroeville, PA - all over an hour's drive. Luckily we can get routine service (oil changes) done locally at the Nissan dealer which helps.

Fritz

Does it make a difference if you go to a Nissan Dealer instead of a Infiniti Dealer for service? I have a Nissan dealer 2 minutes from my house but I go to the Infiniti Dealer which is about 30 minutes away

I hope a new one comes out soon so I can be like, hey let's take some more off the price of this 2013, because it's an older model now.

I with you on that Fritz. I bought new in '04 because of the uniqueness in styling, sports car like handling and features offered. When the first redesign occurred I was not completely sold and ultimately decided to stick with the '04. Around 65,000 miles I began to experience the quality issues others on this site have had...pimpled dash, torn seat sides, multiple wheel bearings, cruise control and CD changer issues. But once those issues were resolved she has continued to perform flawlessly, I have 165k on the odo now. I recently checked dealerships from KY to IN to OH to TN and they all have just a few units on their lots and the colors are limited to black, gray or silver. Not even a Malbec Black or Midnight Mochas, which is at least some difference. I noticed of late that the American and European manufacturers are starting to broaden their interior offerings so maybe the Japanese will take notice...sooner rather than later.

I agree with you 100% man. They need to do something with the FX soon...I also feel like it has lost popularity over the last few years. I'm hoping Infiniti has something up their sleeves for the next gen. Fingers crossed.....

IF you are looking for sports like handling on an SUV/CROSSOVER why are you test driving LINCOLN and GMC SUV's? Test drive a Porsche CayenneS, GTS, or Turbo, ML 63 AMG, RRS SC. I am waiting for the design change too. Even with the new design change, if they don't offer a V8, I will be looking at a Cayeene or the 63 AMG.

ML63 base price is almost 100k.
Cayenne price climbs to over 180k.

Range Rover sport is shit, you have to get the real RR if you are going to go that route, which means spending like 100K.

And at the end of the day, the Cayenne and Range are so predictable. Here in Vancouver the cars are synonymous with rich trophy wives, or old white men.

I much prefer paying substantially less for the Infiniti model, have a very comparable level of performance, and luxury, and have something completely different.

Meme405 just explained my reasons for hoping to buy another FX. I don't really want a Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover or Porsche, nor do I want to look elsewhere - all I want is a choice and when a brand offers the same dull interiors, same paint colors and no significant updates, a person naturally start looking at the competition. When you pay over $50K for a new car you want to at least have a few new and/or interesting improvements and features. It is as if Infiniti has lost interest in the FX - little available inventory anywhere, same old colors and interiors, etc. I have always said that I could not see how Infiniti could possibly improve on the body style, but expected other choices of paint color and interior. Compared to the cost of major retooling, offering some upscale interiors and some interesting paint colors is relatively inexpensive.

Maybe this is the reason that FX sales are down - Here is how the spiral works: No changes normally mean no repeat sales to satisfied and loyal owners. Then less interest by the manufacturer, so lower inventory and even lower sales. Eventually the manufacturer says, "Since sales are so low, I guess we should discontinue this product line". Since the FX was always far ahead of the curve in looks and handling, it is too bad that they did not look ahead and come up with at least a few color/interior changes and give the loyal followers of the brand some reasons to buy a new model. Last evening (hoping for a miracle) I again checked inventory on Infiniti dealers within a 100 mile radius of my home and found nothing new. Some of these dealers used to stock 30 or more FXs on a regular basis, but now have just a few, or even none in stock. Naturally sales on the FX will decline. During the past 11 years since 2003 I have owned an FX45, an EX, a G35 coupe and two Ms (wife's cars) and four FXs and here I am ready and anxious to buy another, but have no options. I recently installed new brakes, tires and battery on my silver 2011 FX35 to give me a little breathing room, but cannot possibly consider waiting until 2016 for a possible upgrade.

My wife got tired of waiting and traded in her 2011 on a new Lincoln MKZ (a beautiful car and 30 mpg on regular fuel). Unfortunately while Lincoln's AWD Suvs have some really nice leather interiors and choice of colors, they do not compare in handling to the FX. So I am looking elsewhere and plan to buy soon. I drove a Cadillac SRX and found it even less desirable then the Lincoln, so don't know where to turn. Saturn previously had some nice SUVs, but the brand was discontinued. I just read the review on the Subaru and the looks are ho-hum to me. Jeep Grand Cherokees look interesting, but are high off the ground and I have never been a fan of Chrysler products anyhow. Fords - maybe, but am not that anxious. I am thinking that any FX owner who wants to upgrade is out of luck at this time. End of story.

IF I were you and I take it you are very picky when buying cars as am I...I would really get the 2014 Jeep SRT8....you will get over how high it is once you feel the Hemi power in that beast. The interior has been vastly improved over past years too...and you can always lower it for an inexpensive mod that will reduce the ride height and give better handling.

How much of a job is to have an SRT8 lowered and what is the approximate cost and who does it? I have lowered street rods numerous times and there are a lot of guessing games. Cutting off spring coils is one way, but after a few hundred miles, a car settles in and the car can drop another inch, creating many problems. I have a 1966 Nova street rod right now that is going to the spring shop for (another) set of new front springs this coming week, as the front tires are rubbing the inside of the fenders. When the front end is raised, the rear usually drops, so that means either changing the lowering blocks or adding another leaf to the rear. The problem that often occurs is that it usually takes two tries and sometimes more. It is hard to alter the height of any vehicle without other issues - many of us like the lower look, but we are not engineers. In spite of my experience with lowering or raising street rods or 50s/60s muscle cars, I would be very reluctant to even think about lowering a $70K vehilcle. Jeeps do sit very high and I agree they would look better if about 2 inches lower.

I'm really not looking for another brand, but am running out of options. I looked at more Infiniti dealer's inventory this morning and most have black, white or a few dark metallic exteriors, and most all have charcoal/black interiors. I will not buy a black car (too hard to maintain) and I do not like white on an SUV as (in my opinion) it makes them look too boxy (even an FX). My present 2011 is silver. The dark charcoal metallic exterior might be OK, but all have charcoal/black interiors. I have had the same charcoal/black interior in my last 2 or 3 FXs, so am just not going to settle for the same ho-hum interior. Infiniti should take a look at the sharp and friendly interiors of most any other brand - most all offer a much wider selection of interiors, as well as exterior colors.

Fritz...Eibach makes lowering springs for the SRT8...about $300 on ebay. Any shop could do this for cheap. It will lower the car about 1.5 to 2 inches and u will not have any issues. It may be time for u to try something new and the Jeep will be a nice upgrade. I think u should go test drive one and I think u will be pleased. Let me know if u do and how u like it :-)

If Infiniti chooses to go with a 7 year life cycle for some of their models, my gripe is that they should at least make the mid-cycle refresh a bit more exciting. The 2nd Gen mid-cycle refresh was so mild and didnt really breathe new life into it compared to what the competition does.

For example, the Mercedes E-Class, the latest refresh makes the pre-refresh look dated, with the new headlight design. When the MB GLK got refreshed, they added blind-spot monitoring to make it up to date. The FX (QX70) now does not have blind spot monitoring, just saying. When the 2nd Gen FX was first released, its technology options were cutting edge, but now everyone has caught up and surpassed it.

My thoughts of what the 2nd Gen FX refresh could have had to keep it competitive (on top of the front grill redesign):
- A bit more body design changes, like minimizing the black unpainted plastic bottoms
- Updated the cluster to include an LCD display between the guages, like the JX
- Added blind spot monitoring to keep up with the competition
- Add heated steering wheel, I mean come on, the Nissan Murano has it
- More exterior and interior colour options

Fritz, you keep mentioning you were to buy another FX, do you mean buy to own or lease? Because if it is buy to own, I would definitely wait till the 3rd Gen, or you will just have the same feeling of been there done that. I own my 2nd Gen FX and plan to keep it long term, like 10 years or so, so I'm content with my 2010, but just would like Infiniti to step it up a bit and not just stay stagnant, at least for their mid-cycle refreshes.

I'm sure it will include all the above and more. I'm sure there wasn't a mid refresh because all resources were put on the brand new look. I bet it will be drastically different inside and out just like between 1st and 2nd gen but in order to do it right it takes a lot of time and testing.

Wow - I knew Infiniti Scene Forum was active, but never expected so much feedback on my posts. All are very helpful and appreciative - Thank you very much. I fully understand that Infiniti is not going to start giving us other options in paints or interiors and/or other very reasonable updates as mentioned by ryus. My main reasons for my posts was (hopefully) to try to motivate Infiniti to do the following, (provided they monitor this forum, which I hope is the case):

1) Keep the FX in production, as it is by far the best handling SUV of all, with possibly some exceptions that are not normally within most buyer's price range. The FX is no longer even mentioned on their TV ads and mail brochures.
2) Make gradual updates such as listed by ryus - especially the blind spot monitoring, heated steering wheel and other enhancements.
3) More colors of exteriors and interiors (my main complaint in most of my posts). If a buyer doesn't want black or white or most other colors with graphite interior, the number of available FXs is very limited, especially now with low dealer inventory everywhere.
4) I don't like the "Q" model numbering either, but that is another issue. (BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes and others all do the same - big mistake).

A little about myself - I do not lease - always write a check for the difference. My first experience with Infiniti was at the annual Naples, Florida Ferrari Club Car Show in February of 2003. For this show, the entire main street (5th Avenue South) is blocked off and antique and special interest cars are on display. Although the show is sponsored by the Ferrari Club, other cars are welcome. Infiniti had some cars on display on one of the side streets, just off of 5th Ave. There were so many people around the cars that my wife and I had to take a look. We worked through the crowd and there sat a Beryllium FX45 with 20" wheels. A 10 or 12 year-old boy worked into the crowd next to us, and loudly remarked, "Awesome!". I had been buying Ford Explorers and Expeditions from our local Ford dealer (who was only 2 blocks from work) and could not believe that such a car could be produced. Our business is in Canfield, Ohio, which is near the big Lordstown GM plant, so we are in GM territory - in our area they haven't even accepted Ford yet! At the time my wife had a 1997 Mercedes E320 V-8 that she bought new (our only previous imported car). While I was reluctant to buy another import, when we got back from Florida, my wife and I stopped at the Infiniti dealer in Cleveland to take another look, and on the floor was the exact same FX45 in the same Beryllum color with the big wheels and outstanding orange and black leather interior. To say it was striking was an understatement.

At the time, a salesman (noticing we were senior citizens) started showing us lower priced Infinitis and started pushing the FX35, as they had a huge stock of 35s. I kept looking at the FX45, but noticed the price difference for an FX35 was substantial, so started looking at the 35's. My wife knows me very well and kept telling me "buy the FX45 - I now how you are" and we kept going back to the FX45 in the showroom. We finally made the purchase after the usual haggling with the trade. After giving the salesman our check, he remarked, "You do not fit the profile of an FX buyer". He then mentioned that most guys want the FX45 V-8 and their wives always keep pushing the FX35 V-6, but that my wife kept pushing the FX! He truly could not understand this but of course was glad to make the sale.

I then told him that I was an antique car collector, and also was big into drag racing in the 50s, 60s and early 70s until I was in my forties. I guess he finally understood and we picked up the car the following week. Since that time, I have traded to a new FX each time a new color came out (have owned at least 4) and once had an EX, which was nice, but just a little too small at the time (maybe now, but not then). My wife finally traded in her Mercedes on a G35 coupe, later moving up to several M37X sedans, as wanted the all-wheel drive for our Ohio winters. She recently traded in her 15,000 mile 2011 M37X on a new Lincoln MKZ, since again there were no major upgrades or improvements with the new M, and she wanted something new, along with the "buy American" thing. Actually I really like the MKZ, which is very powerful - not at all what you would expect - has a really hot supercharged 4 cylinder Eco-Boost engine, and gets 30 mpg on regular gas (34-35 on a trip), and has every possible feature that Infiniti does not offer (plus on the dash push button transmission which is very handy) and a new metallic cream color with brown leather interior and no moon roof! You can sometimes actually buy a car without a moon roof, but they are hard to find. Since we never use a moon roof, why pay $1200 or more premium.

My 2011 FX35 has 38K miles, and to stall for time I recently installed a set of new tires and front brakes, along with a new battery. Since then, kept hoping for something new with Infiniti. Besides the love of the brand, over a 10-year period of owning Infinitis, never had even one reason to take a car back to the dealer for anything - period! So far I have looked at several GM Suvs, and drove three Jeeps: A 4 cylinder, (which is nothing like the peppy Lincoln Eco-Boost), a Jeep V6 which is barely OK and a Jeep V6 diesel, which is fine, but sits too high. One Jeep has a switch to lower the car to get in and out, but this is too much trouble to deal with, as you have to do this each time you get out of the car. Then it goes up next time it is driven. If you forget to lower the car, it is as long way down on the way out. I drove a Cadillac CTX and compared to my FX, had a heavy feel - hard to describe, but not what I was hoping for. I even drove a Cadillac CTS coupe with fold down rear seats, a sharp car with concealed door handles, but no thanks.

Mlvrn97 has been pushing the Jeep SRT8 ($70K range), which is really sharp, but I no longer am looking for a 500 HP car - I like power, but if I bought a SRT8, I might get interested in drag-racing again so will not be going that route at age 82- Sorry Mlvrn97. Also because of my age, I do not feel like waiting on a new Infiniti change in 2017. In the meantime, I took a good look at BMW & Mercedes Suvs (didn't like). Both BMW and Mercedes have Navigation that has a knob to turn and push - not at all like the user-friendly navigation in our Infinitis. Audi- dealer is too far away. So because of Infiniti's failure to upgrade at least the paint and interior colors, I am now taking a good look elsewhere. I am waiting to test drive the 2015 smaller SUV Lincoln MKC, which is just coming out, and it has a 285 hp turbo-charged 2.3L 300 HP Eco-Boost 4 cylinder, with push-button shift on the dash. My backup plan now if I do not like the MKC is to consider an EX again, as at least they have a color combination that I like (maroon exterior with wheat interior), provided I can find one. My wife liked the EX that we had for a short time, but it was too small for me then, but now might be OK. Then if and when the 2017 FX comes out, and provided some changes and enhancements are made, it won't be hard to trade up at that time.

Our immediate family collects antique and classic cars, and along with our son we have over 40 such vehicles, including 60s muscle cars, originals, street rods, modifieds, 50s Buicks, Cadillacs and LaSalle convertibles, Pontiac Safaris and other wagons, 2 fire trucks, 3 Model A Fords, and more. All are on display in our car museum in Canfield, Ohio (southwest of Youngstown near the Ohio Turnpike).
