Wheel Bearings -- When to replace?

I read that the wheel bearings need to be replaced eventually. I have around 90,000 miles and don't have any issues/noise.

My questions is should I just get this changed to a complete new assembly and be pro-active about it? Sounds like many of them fail anywhere from 30k miles to 100k miles.

Any thoughts on this?

my passenger side is whining when i first start driving. after things warm up the whine goes away. i haven't spent a whole hell of a lot of time trying to diagnose my problem, but i suspect a wheel bearing. i'm about to break 40k on my 2004.

I never noticed a noise, but mine was replaced during a state inspection around 30k miles. I think it was from hitting a curb though. If you've had any sort of hard impact on the wheel that could cause a problem sooner.

has anyone replaced the rears? I think I'm just going to replace the front two, the front passenger def needs to be replaced, might as well do it in pairs.

Hey Stu, what made them check the bearings during a state inspection? I thought the inspection was all about emissions. I'm asking because I'm due for an inspection next month.. wondering if the dealer will check mine out too..

I think it was part of the inspection, I guess they do a full lookover. It's basically making the sure the car is roadworthy. I guess the biggest part of that is the emissions because that is a hot topic.

Had to replace mine some where around 30k. Just the front passenger one though.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. Infiniti now says only my front passenger needs replacing, but suggests replacing both at the same time (90k so far).

Just wanted to give an update.

At 91,000 I replaced the passenger side front wheel hub bearing. This is the first and only one I replaced; all the rest are fine.

Luckily, the ABS sensor came off and didn't break (or else it would have been another $190 parts/labor). I had the fender bolts replaced at 30,000 miles (M6 7T bolt - 748B7-CG000, 2 for each side, 4 total) and I did it AGAIN because my sound came back at around 50,000 but never got it fixed.

In total, it cost $500 for parts and labor.

My car runs like brand new, I should have replaced my wheel hub bearing sooner. I'm glad I only did one as the Infiniti Tech mentioned, where I initially was just going to do both even though the driver side was fine.

I highly recommend Gold Coast Autobody (900 W Division St, Chicago, IL 60642) and ask for Joel -- his direct cell phone is 708-420-7074. Tell him Ed sent you and he'll take care of you. Mark is the Infiniti tech there and worked at Gold Coast Infiniti beforehand and they have all the Nissan/Infiniti tools/diagnostics like the dealership.

They are aftermarket friendly and they know what they're doing.
