I came from driving a 2009 370z and was looking for an SUV/XUV with a sporty feel to the drive. I test drove almost every luxury/mid-level SUV/XUV available.
X3 (30i and 35i) Both were great to drive, especially the 35i. My main draw back was the dated interior and exterior design wasn't very inspiring. With options, the car quickly skyrockets in price with little room for negotiation.
Q7 - Test drove looking for a Q5. Test drove the TDI and 3.2. The TDI was too sluggish at high speeds overall the car had no sporty feel what so ever. I felt like I was driving a 4x4 mini van.
Jeep Grand Cherokee - Great drive, powerful, and fully capable off-road. Cons: Not so great on gas, interior plastics gave the car a cheap feel. Fully loaded was too close to luxury brand prices, I'd rather be a snob and go luxury. Also, the design looked like something that would quickly be dated.
Jeep Liberty - Similar gripes to the Grand Cherokee with the added complaint of a weak engine.
Q5- This was a tough choice between the FX 35. The Audi Quattro AWD system gives you a consistent feeling of stability at all speeds and corners (not always a good thing). The car drove great, and I was impressed by the design. The 2.0T was more nimble that I anticipated giving plenty of power throughout the power band, which was very surprising. Draw back was too many stories of friends with new Audis spending time at the dealership for warranty fixes/issues.
The FX 35 stood out because the drive was sporty, had a similar layout and configuration to my Z, elegant design, and fully loaded was within my budget after including incentives for being a nissan owner, discounts, and getting a excellent trade in value. The only complaints I have are the cargo space and wish they put in the VQ37HR in the new FXs.
