What other cars did you consider buying before the FX?

Believe it or not I actually was looking at the mazda 6 for a while. I went to a dealership but didn't feeli like the saleman was taking me serious, when he finally asked me do I know how much this car cost; I stormed out feeling insulted ( I mean I was going to pay cash) and ended at the nissan dealership across. Then I started looking at the maxima (my first car was a 91 maxima),the Audi 4, the TL, then looked at the Muranos until I test drove it (felt like I was driving a minivan).
Then I heard the G35 coup and i was sold on the sound alone. Then my job took me out of the country , that's when I decided I was gonna get my first SUV, and that's how I found my baby. Once I decided I was gonna get an SUV didn't bother looking at any other make, the hardest was decision was 35 or 45; went with the 45. I'm loving it. Now I see the mazda 6 and wonder what was i thinking.

the day I bought my fx I had no intentions of even thinking of buying any car, let alone the best car I have ever owned. I had just recently bought an 01 cadillac dts, crimson red with camel interior & chrome dts wheels., loaded & perfect all around, I spent on it doing everything that needed attention & I redid the suspention, rode like a dream, 300hp northstar. the car was beautiful to me & to most that saw it, a real striking beautiful car that I have wanted since they first came out, really wanted a black one, but this red was so beautiful that I fell in love when I saw it.

I was just about to put a really elaborate high end competition computer controlled audio system in it, even bought a 10" tablet to build into the dash(in the fx now) & bought a computer controlled pro studio processor, cut it up & was in the begining stages of intall.

was a normal day at work, get a call from a customer who happened to be a doctor, told me that his teenage daugter just smashed his infiniti into a guardrail up at school & that it was being towed in to me. it pulls up in front of my shop & first thing I'm thinking is if this ain't totalled it's a great job, had to write up real nice, full nose with airbag deploy, nice job for my bodyshop for sure.

I remember when the fx was first introduced, there was a writeup in one magazine that outlined what this fx was all about, 350z platform, almost 300hp, very stiff body, aluminum hood etc... & when I saw it I was in love, but the kind of love you'd have for anything that is so far beyond anything I could even imagine actually buying, the way you might fall in love with a vyron or something, anyway.... but that was back in 03 when they were just coming out...

so here's this good job that just got dropped off the truck, first one I'm ever really getting to check out, sit in the drivers seat + think wow, nice car... the more I look at it, the more I really like it, but it's a job. maybe some day I could get one of these was a thought, but it's worth still like 25K, ouch...

start checking it out as far as the hit & nothings bent, nothings hurt even the slightest structure wise, just needs a whole bunch of new bolt on parts really, aside from the parts costing half a fortune this thing is stll perfect, new parts & she's really good as new... ok, now why won't it run.... starts & dies, starts & dies, but nothing appears damaged that could cause this... the air cleaners cracked, but the mass air seems untouched... wtf, who knows... well see, maybe a computer, maybe the mass air sensor, ????

anyway, so evening comes & in walks the doctor, I tell him what I see so far & can't see any reason why it's not running, could be many possibilities really... can't say if it's totalled or not yet, we need to get the adjuster down & see....

then, he hits me with it... gee, I hope it's totalled, I'd rather just go out & buy a new one, I'm afraid after all this, I assured him that the car really has no damage at all & with all new parts it really will be flawless again, but still don't know about it running or anything electrical, so can't say much about that part really yet... he just keeps telling me he don't want it & he hopes it's totalled but if I have to fix it he knows I'll do a good job so let's just see what happens, he leaves....

well as soon as he leaves I go back out to the fx, look it over again, I felt like I was looking at an abused & wounded & then abandoned child, how could he not want this thing, It's beautiful... I spent no less than an hour looking it over real well, & by the time I drove home that night the fx was all I could think about, I think I really just fell in love with her at that point... long story short I winded up giving him the insurance settlement plus added the difference so he walked away with the same money as had it been totalled & I adopted her... the rest is history, I fixed her with all brand new parts from infiniti, there were a few things that really could have been fixed but I was so in love that I didn't want anything repaired, I wanted no bondo, I even changed both fenders even though they were just slightly bent at the front corners, I wanted everything to be precise & perfect. was well worth it, def the best car I have ever owned....

this is what it looked like shortly after I bought it, new radiator & radiator support bolted in & problem solved with it running, turns out a tiny sliver of plastic from the air cleaner was holding the throttle plate slightly open, that's it... I already bought a new style bumper & grille & hung them on there to make sure they'd fit, but hadn't touched it other that that yet... you can see that the fender & hood could have been fixed, but I didn't even consider that, replaced anything that had any damage at all...

That's a nice story John, but you never finished . . was it totalled? Is she a salvage? Did you basically get as a steal price from the doctor, or the ins. company?
Either way, it's likely one of the nicest FXs on the board, & probably a very happily adopted child.

Uhhhh...dave...not to say his fx isn't CRAZY or jaw dropping mod work...but arn't u forgetting rookies car?

thanks dave, was trying not to make my story too long & boring, but yeah, anyway, to finish the story:

had this fx been totalled I don't think I would have wanted it. it would have involved buying it back from the insurance company & they would have branded the title 907a salvage, but as it stands now there is no carfax history of any of this, records now show never been damaged in any way according to carfax...

the damage wasn't bad but the problem was parts are stupid expensive on the fx, I mean the headlights alone are over $2,500 list, the radar cruize sensor is like $1,400, those are the only 2 parts I didn't use brand new from infiniti, gotta love ebay, those parts winded up costing me under $500 complete  then there was the pas airbag, sensors, control module & dash are over $3,000 in parts alone... add hood, 2 fenders, radiator support, radiator, condensor, fans, air cleaner etc & all the labor... the fx wrote up to like 15k, not totalled but close... I did lowball the doc slightly, based my price on wholesale instead of retail & winded up giving him like 7k for the fx plus of course he kept the insurance check, he didn't mind loosing a grand or 2, he wanted out & I had to negotiate cause I really couldn't afford this project, but I just had to have it....

had I decided to fix her as cheap as I could, I'd be driving a stock silver 03fx that would have only cost me around 10k total, not including my labor of course, but I'm not a stock car kinda guy... at the time I really didn't like the silver & I decided to paint the whole thing over in a custom black pearl & I decided to customize her a bit.I winded up building the custom dash with the 10.4 touchscreen before I even registered her or drove her,I did consider putting my whole competition audio system in here but had so much else on my plate that I never really got around to that yet even to this day...

luckily my dts wasn't really chopped up yet so a while after I got this fx on the road I put the caddy up for sale... at this point a little over a year later, after all the repairs & customizing, after all of my mods & performance upgrades & including the supercharger that I bought from shady & still have sitting in my basement, I'm into this fx for a bit over 20k not including my labor.

there is still so much more I want to do to her, I seriously was going to chop her up again this winter & do a custom body, but now I've decided to get at least another year out of this paintjob & instead concentrate on finishing other things like a competition audio system & a few other things I have in mind, I really want to do a set of sick 22's & that was my driving force to rush stretching the body now, but since the biggest 22 staggered tire setup I could get that will work with awd is a 315/30-22 rear & it can actually fit the stock body I decided to order a set of custom 22's to fit the stock body & work on finishing everything else... I'm working with iforged right now to build a set of 22X11's out back & 22X9.5's front... there going to send me the wheel centers alone so I can color match them & send them back to them so they can finish building the wheels... as cool as a custom body would be I think I'll enjoy a crazy system in the fx more... as it stands right now I hardly ever listen to the stock blowse system, I really miss having a car with nice music & it's one of the only things I'm not thrilled with on my fx, the body can wait as long as I'm getting a nice set of staggered 22's under her by spring time anyway...

now the only thing I have to hope for is no customer winds up bringing his Q7 or something into my shop & then says he doesn't want it:tongue: short of that I'll keep the fx a few more years until I can get a deal on a nice used fx50s, who knows, maybe my body may wind up staying stock until that point even, then I could retire this fx from daily use & really go off on it full custom show type stuff if I'm so inclined at the time, but right now I'm enjoying the little mods & driving my baby every day... I have other cars including one with a sick system already but I haven't even cared to drive any one of them since the day my fx was registered, I love my fx, end of story:biggrin:

I copy-paste parts of John's posts into different places.. Easier to read that way  But those tuning posts or the one with the exhaust shop.. OMG.. Still worth reading every sentence..

sorry guys but I like details:tongue: I figure who ever isn't so interested in what I have to say will just skim or skip it, but for those that are interested I try to include all the details, especially with technical stuff, I'd rather have too much information than not enough, after all, can never be just enough info for everyone who might read it

imagine what my post count would be if all of my posts were seperated into little one paragraph posts:cool: I got about 6,000 posts on mp3car & the many of them are really huge novels too... yeah, guess I do type too much:embarrassed:

Was looking at an Audi Q7. The only model available a year ago was a 4.6L priced at 65 grands!!! That's about 35 grands more than my budget.

Than I looked a the MDX. I like the horsepower but the design was a lil tame against the FX muscular figure. Plus there weren't any used ones around cause it's the first new model year.

.......... ..... ... .. (man., I need a cup of coffee, feeling drained from just scrolling & reading) .. . ::thinking:: (love the details ,but any closer, I'll be living in his bodyshop ) .... .....

I like the Q7 alot.. but sometimes when i park next to one i look at it and look at my FX and in my head i always say." damn my FX is sexy!!!" the Q7 have a nice body but its kind of long which makes it look like a lifted up wagon... but it still i nice Crossover SUV.. i havent test my stock FX against a Q7 yet.. i wonder how would that go.. also That was a great story John!!!

:iS::tup:

I like the Q7 too... not as much as the FX, but they do make me look when I see one... I've seen a white one lowered with black mesh 22's -it was HAWT! I don't care for it's cousin tho...the VW Touareg.

umm i started off wanting the EX35 after seeing some of the commericals and thought the all around view monitor was pretty cool, after doing some research i knew right away what i really wanted was the 09 FX35, few weeks later ordered mine brand new and i love my car to death. Still i really want to try out the FX50

When I graduated high school in 2002 right around when the FX was first introduced, I remember thinking about one day how i would love to own one. So when I finally had the money I went straight for it. No other cars...no shopping around. Straight for the FX.
