Weird Start...

didn't get a chance to update..... replaced my battery friday. all of the hard start and low idle after startup symptoms are gone.

11.8V before starting should be enough. what you need to measure is the voltage at the battery while cranking. on our squad cars at work, i get a lot of computers that will turn off while starting the vehicle. usually, they're dropping voltage while resting, but, anywhere in that 10-11.2 range and you can start to have some problems, i.e. long cranking, rough initial idle after turning over. when the battery is the culprit for this particular instance, the voltage drops to around the 8V mark while cranking. usually anything under 10V and you'll want to start thinking about changing the battery because it's starting to go.

also, 12.2V going down to 12.09V mhkeyemd shouldn't really be a concern imo. .1V over night (16 hours) is nothing. your interior lights staying on after shutting down, the hood light, even an led blinking could contribute to that. again, not really a concern if anyone is wondering. what should trigger a concern would be measuring the voltage at the battery and seeing it rapidly trickle down almost a timer counting down to zero.

hope this helps everyone out. * i haven't read every post in here since my last to have a total knowledge of some of the other problems/concerns, but, for the specific one i'm talking about, the battery is the problem.

Maybe the battery could be somewhat related to my problem then. Mine died a couple weeks ago at the track after I had all my lights on inside and out, and was using an electric air pump to fill the tires back up. I didn't start the car during any of this. Cleaning the TB helped me though.

with staring a car, it all about AMPs less about voltage.
ie, if you had a loose battery terminal, you will measure 12v but the amps will not be enough to crank the engine (less surface area, etc).

glad you got it working. strange you have to change the battery every 3 years though...

Getting the FX back today.

Last visit: throttle body replaced. Symptoms reoccured
Recent visit: fuel pump and battery replaced.

Throttle body and fuel pump ( under warranty )
battery ($90) The dealership said the original battery wasn't charging properly. They said the factory will cover half of the price..so the total given was $160. WTF? We spoke to the manager and drop the price to $90.

Edit: wifey gave the manager a piece of her mind for replacing the battery without her ok. The battery was no charge.

I'll follow up when I see the FX to see how it's running.

Anyone know how much it would cost to replace the belts? They were charging $200

Cost me just under 50 dollars for belts and 20-30 mins to change belts. I followed the DIY and it was easy as hell. You should save the $150 and do the belts yourself.

Keep us updated on the battery. I'll get to doing everything to fix the problem this Friday when i finally go on vacation.

MV Infiniti charged me for the drive belt $164+tax (part & labor). Also, I got 15% off because they are trying to compete with local dealers..so it cost me about $150. Ever since I turned the headlight off before starting my car in the morning, my car is starting right away without hesitation. Coincidence??? I'm trying this for about 1 week to see if battery was the issue with hesitation. I think the long cranking before starting was definitely taken care by the fuel pump fix.

I think you had a different problem. My car cranks fine and fires up fine, but feels like it'll stall before getting back to normal mode. This is only in the morning.

I just installed a new battery so am anxious for morning to see if it takes care of my problem. My car sounded pretty weak starting this morning. After the new battery, it started instantly and much stronger than I have heard it start in a long time. I am crossing my fingers.

I drive with my lights on all the time by leaving the switch in the auto position. I taped the sensor so it thinks it is always dark. Anyway, I wonder if the lights being on for 1 minute when I turn the car off slowly causes the battery to wear out?

Nissan/Infiniti could not have placed the battery in a worse location. You cannot see where the damn bolts go if the battery is in place, the hood is in the way, you have to remove two pieces of trim just to get to the battery, the positive cable is too stiff/short and gets in the way...ARG. I have never had a battery take 40 friggin' minutes to replace.

When I pull into the garage, my lights always turn on. So this almost always happens. Not sure if it has caused me any issues though. I need to check and see if starting the car in the garage, with the lights coming on first, makes it harder to start.

Problem fixed, it was the battery. I would have never guessed the battery could cause the car to almost stall in the morning, and then be fine the rest of the day. Unbelievable how much stronger this morning's start was.

O, I totally forgot to put my conclusion on this issue.

I replaced my battery soon after my previous post under the thread and the car has been working fine.
