Watch your bumper clips

My FX35 is now 10 years old and has 198K miles, which means that odd things are starting to deteriorate. Case in point - the rear bumper undertray is affixed to three brackets which terminate near the rear bumper. There is a rubber strip which insulates it from vibration, but it is affixed only by three 15mm push clips. After I heard a strange rattle above 80, I checked the car out. The center clip was intact but had ripped through the undertray. The side clips were gone. So basically, with enough droop, the undertray acted like an airfoil and pulled down, cracking the plastic on 3 places in the rear bumper. I ziptied it until I could get new fasteners, but the damage was done - I now require a new bumper skin.

Apparently being 1 in. from the muffler for 198k miles takes its toll on plastic - go figure.

So if you're above 150k, consider checking and replacing the plastic push fasteners as necessary, especially the ones subjected to stress or heat.

I'll edit with pics later, including my semi-failed epoxy fix.

FWIW, 2 of mine were very brittle and one broke when I was removing them to install hitch. Mine's an '07 w/ 56K on it when I did it.
