VQ35DE Dekonstrukt

I talked to my contact at the machine shop today. He gave me an estimate for prepping the empty block, polishing the crank, and rebuilding the heads of about $800. About $250 of that is cleaning, which I'm going to do myself to save some dough. Anyone have any suggestions for cleaning products? At this point I'm using a plastic putty knife (gaskets), a stiff plastic bristled brush (loose dirt/grime), and Carb cleaner (oil). I foresee many man hours of scrubbing in my future. Thinking about buying a pressure washer...

usually when a machine shop cleans a block they hot tank it and boil it out, not going to be able to clean it anything like that yourself but $250 sounds excessive... years ago it was like $65, I could see it now being maybe $125-150 or so tops... maybe there charging you for manually cleaning it up first before it goes into the tank? I know there not going to want to throw a block in there with caked up greasy buildup but how bad could this really be?

You're right that it does include manually cleaning the gaskets and such before the tank cleaning.

The dude said their hot tank will eat aluminum though, so special accommodations have to be made (more time). The breakdown is like this:

1) Block hot tank (alum) - $104.50
2) Buff + prep surfaces - $52.80
3) Bore job (within reason. A huge overbore will be more expensive) - $174.90
4) final wash for assembly - $52.80

Total: $385.00

Est for rebuilding 2 dohc v6 heads : $400

He hasn't seen any of it, but I did tell him it was in a flood...

Removed the gaskets this evening...

Figured since you're one of the few people stripping a motor down, I thought I'd ask here. Is the timing cover on the RWD and AWD the same? I'm hoping you might know since you drive an AWD and you're stripping a RWD motor. I know the oil filters are in different spots and the timing cover does have a few bolts only accessible from the pan. Considering swapping mine out, but don't want to remove everything only to find out it won't work. Thanks.

You know, that's a good question and I don't know off the top of my head. I can take some better/more specific pics for you if that will help...?

Whenever you had time, that would be awesome. I couldn't find a good answer, they look the same, but since the oil filter location and alternator location are different, I just don't know. Tired of looking at how ugly mine is so I was going to swap a polished one in there, but all of the cores are for RWD.
