Very intermittent fail to start engine

Went out to start the car yesterday. Never any issue at all, just usually vroooom after 1-2s of cranking starter. Yesterday it would not start. Cold engine, plenty of fuel. Time and time again I would crank it for 5-10 seconds and it cranked over nice and fast but had not even the slightest hiccup of a start.

After about 8-10 episodes of this, waiting 30 seconds between episodes, I decided to disconnect the battery. I reconnected the battery a minute later but unfortunately same problem. Starter very vigorously turning engine but not even a hiccup or a thought of actually starting. No unusual lights on dash. After another 8-10 times of this, and nearly ready to give up, I tried it again. It immediately started as if there was never an issue. Nice healthy regular start.

Any ideas? I have no idea where to start with this. It has easily started first time about 5 times since yesterday (both hot and cold), and every one of the 20,000 times before that.
