Looking at the line that attaches to the air intake tube, it seems to be kinked. What is the purpose/function of the vacuum line and what can happen if flow is restricted or stopped through that line? Been watching temp and mpg - no changes so far.

The line that connects to the intake tube is an air inlet for your valve covers, a breather. On the passenger side of the plenum you will see a vacuum line that connects from the valve cover, on vacuum air gets sucked into the plenum from the valve covers and the hose on the intake allows the air to flow freely. Not really sure how to explain it better, but yes make sure it is not kinked and flows freely.

I understand that no hose should be kinked, so I'll take care of it - but I just wanted to know the purpose of this line (and the other one you mention on the passenger side). What "breathing" is required? Can you explain what is going on at the other end of this vacuum line? Just wondering if the function could be improved at all - translating to better overall valve performance?

update - ended up having to shorten the hose by about an inch. Clamped it back up and it's kink free. It was kinked for a little more than a week and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

There was a little oil in the line when I disconnected it. Might be my intake filter element oil - that's the only place I could see it coming from. Hope it doesn't mess with my MAF.
