Used H&Rs with a little rust

There is a seller on eBay that has a used set of H&Rs for $200 shipped. Bad news is the miles are unknown and one of the coils had some surface rust on it. Would you pull the trigger and buy them or would you pay the extra $60 for new ? I am buying new KYB replacements at the same time therefore I am on a budget. I've changed a lot of springs and have not seen a set with rust which is why I am hesitant.

timca, the "thanks" feature is to really give props for a person who really gone out of their ways in helping. dont pass it out like hotcakes =)

but yea, haven't heard of any H&R snapping issues yet.

Wow, aren't we all on the same wave length or what. If you can wait a little, say around end of February or early March, there should be a few H&R springs for sale here, because there a few of us are changing out to the Kido coilovers.

Yep that is the spring. Sorry for the hot cake thanks! I just wanted to show my appreciation for possibly making a fatal mistake. I have used thanks before on other forums and no how it works

I may be able to wait until Feb but getting pretty antsy! Once I start with mods it is hard to stop plus after reading about some of the rides on here I get pretty impatient about doing my own

How many people do you think are selling their set up? Also concerned with mileage, etc. I am replacing my struts because it has 58K miles on it.

Wow those are pretty rusted. I'd stay far far away from those. I wonder why they got so rusted like that. I mean the paint came off but i don't see why the paint peeled off like that.

58k miles is nothing to worry about. I think it's recommended to change the struts at around 80k.

I am not buying the rusty ones. Too risky. Would rather buy new unless someone has a newer set they will be takin off when they go to the coil overs.

I read on here that they should be changed at 60k. I figured since I have them out might as well replace the struts. Since the rear shocks does not have the spring on them, I may replace in a few months.

Well there are 12 of us going to have the Kido coilovers in a few weeks. So I figure at least 6 should be available since I don't remember if they're on H&R currently. My H&R springs will be taken by a local member when I change mine out.

Springs general last the life of the car. Unless they're really high mileage (100K). 60K is where most of us change out our oem struts and shocks. It is wise to change the struts and shocks since you're about to hit 60K miles so you don't have to pay for installation again if change your struts and shocks later.

Thanks. Sorry I should have been clear. Yes 60k was in reference to the shocks. I will also be doing all the work less the alignment myself.
The springs should last 100k-150k miles (unless you're in a Honda!)

I know the 60K you're referencing the struts and shocks. No worries :) It's great that you do the work yourself. Might wanted to replace the strut bearing while you at it. Plastic ones are around $15 + shipping and the metal ones are $45 + shipping. Cheap insurance to avoid having taking the spring off the struts later on when they fail.

I hear the bearing pops out and gets lost rather easily. I was going to replace these anyway. Big difference between plastic and metal in terms of driveability and/or longevity? I saw the Infinitpartsusa has OEM's for $15/ea plus $10 shipping (Total). I am assume these are plastic.
