Tunnel behind the battery

I been meaning to ask this question a while ago, I once replaced the battery a while ago, when i removed the old one, i saw what appeared to be an inlet to a tunnel right on the firewall roughly 3" x 2", it was not exactly behind the battery and rather closer towards the center of the engine bay. It was shut off with a plastic tape by the previous owner. I was not in position to investigate it at that time and I never revisited it again.

Any idea what that might be? Is it the fresh air inlet to the cabin AC?

I know by where the brake fluid is there is an inlet into the cabin where I brought my angel eye wiring through to put them on a switch

I know that one, I used it to run a cable directly from the horn on the steering wheel to the horn relay to resolve the horn issue after it quit working, the subject tunnel inlet however is on the other side closer to the battery.
