Hi I'm new to the infiniti world. I just purchased a 2008 FX35 64000 miles in immaculate condition. I want to drain and refill my transmission as I don't know if the previous owner has ever changed the fluid. The dealer wants $30 plus per quart for the matic s. My question is what other fluid is approved and what do other members on this board use. Thanks

Hi all, I'm new to the infiniti world. I just purchased a 2008 FX35 with 64000 miles in immaculate condition. I want to do a transmission oil drain and refill. The dealer wants $30 plus a quart for the matic s fluid. My question is there any alternative ? What fluid do other members on this board use ?

Any JASO A1 compatible fluid is the same as Matic S which is made by Castrol. So pretty much most full synthetic ATF's are compatible. I run Mobil 1. And if you want to use Matic S, just buy it on Amazon or someplace similar, it's $14-15 a quart shipped.

OK, I ordered from amazon, not too expensive. Has anyone ever dropped the Transmission pan ? It seems like you could possibly get an additional half quart out by dropping the pan. As I understand there are a couple of magnets in the pan that can be cleaned when it is dropped. Anyone ?

I don't remember anyone drop then transmission pan just for fluid change. There is a magnet in the pan and its little over half quart of fluid can be empty out if do so. Also there is no filter needed to be replaced in case you're wondering.

Thx for the reply. I already ordered the gasket so I'll drop the pan just to see. I will do this in a couple of weeks and will post my findings.

Dropping the pan only gets you that 1/2 quart and is tedious. It's easy, but it's something like 14 bolts. And as Andy said, no filter, it's just a metal screen attached to the VB. No real need to replace the gasket unless yours is already leaking. I've had my pan off 3 times now and never replaced the gasket, no leaks. Even if you drop the pan and get the extra 1/2 quart out, you still have probably another quart in the torque converter. So I've just accepted that there will always be some old fluid in there.

Sorry to jack this thread but yesterday I drained the transmission fluid thru the drain plug and I noticed that the plug wasn't magnetic. Did just certain models come with a magnetic drain plug?

I know that's been brought up before and I'm not sure. When I drained my transmission fluid the first time, the drain bolt had some metal on there which makes me believe it's magnetic. The rear/front diffs and transfer case all have magnetic drain plugs so I'm assuming the transmission would too. But there are magnets in the pan so I don't know.

As shadow said, there is a round magnet seat at the opening of the drain hole. The plug is not magnetic.

Finally got around to changing my fluid (Nissan matic S). 3.5 quarts out of drain plug. Another 1.5 quarts after dropping the pan, For a total of five quarts. There are 2 magnets in the pan that were a little dirty. I had let the vehicle sit overnight to see if there was any debris collection at the bottom of the pan. There was a tiny little non ferrous metal that had collected on the bottom of the pan. I also reused the gasket because it was not damaged in any way. The plug is not magnetic.

Nice...I plan on dong this in the next few weekends when I get a chance. Already bought 6 Qts of the fluid months ago, but I will not be dropping the pan.
Will use the other qts for the transfer case which I think is 1.5 qts....

I just bought 5 Quart of Matic S #999MP-MTS005 they want $50 i offer $47 bucks with my ebay bucks i earned it only costed me $40.75 from Sheehy infiniti dealer in Chantilly,Va

All I am at 128000 and have not changed the trans fluid. Should I or not at this point? I have heard differing opinions so?
