Transmission Fluid J or S or ?

My 2004 FX45 has 91000 miles on it and it is due for a transmission flush. It says on the hood to only use Nissan J, which I understand they do not make? and S has replaced it. What should I use and what is a good source (low price)?
 
yes they don't make J anymore. Grab some Matic-S tranny oil. some dealership or online stores might still have S. makes no difference. same oil. S is slightly superior they say. i had both, i mixed them. no problems.

assuming that you don't have any warranty left on your FX, you can definitely try Castrol, RP and even pennzoil if they say they are equivalent to the Nissan OEM brand. As long as you put in the right amount and change it at regular intervals, you should be fine.
 
No I do not have any warranty left and I will think about using Castrol, they seem to have a good reputation and their product is synthetic which is good
 
if you want to do a flush, 5-6 qts will be plenty if you want to do drain and fill, then you need 4 qts only. there's a debate here abt which one is more proper, I do drain and fill. this helps the old oil mix with some new ones.

I picked up 4 qts of Nissan S on Ebay for $30.94 Shipping and tax included. That is not much more than the Castrol which would have cost me $25.80.
 
Today, after much difficulty (most shops won't do a flush and discourage it), I got the trans flushed. The shop used Super Tech Premium Synthetic multi vehicle fluid which he said is rated as a replacement for Nissan Matic J fluid. Afterward, I verified that the trans is running great (a veteran transmission tech - from a different shop - checked it out thoroughly.) However, I am confused (as is this veteran trans tech) about the difference in the fluids.

What is the significance of the difference between transmission fluids? My car is a Nissan product and the manual is adamant about using Nissan Matic J fluid in the trans.


Some of these shops I've spoken too claim that the dealer fluid must be used. Then I find out some shops are using multi-vehicle fluid - what is the truth?
