Trailer Hitch

I am thinking of getting a class 2 trailer hitch for the ride. Any idea what has to be done to connect the trailer lights to the car? Is there existing connectors in the vehicle or do you have to tap in to some wir4es on your own? Also, would it be better to take it to the dealer and have them do it or go to a aftermarket installer? Any idea of price/ dealer/ aftermarket?

Thanks

I am at the same point as you are (except, I have Gen 1). Here is what I am going to do. I am going to install the hitch myself, but then take it to the dealer to install the lightning harness. In Gen 1, it is not "plug-and-play", so they have to splice into existing wires. I heard some horror stories how UHaul has butchered harnesses. Also, if dealer messes it up, they replace it for Free. Reason I want to do hitch install myself, is pricing. Dealership's break down is as follows: hitch + harness install ~$950; just harness ~$350. You can get Curt hitch for about $150
hope this helps

It's very easy to install the trailer hitch OEM harness on 1st Generation. It took about an hour, no cutting or splicing, everything is plug and play.
1st Generation OEM harness for $99.95
2nd Generation OEM harness for $79.95

The OEM hitch is the bitch. The OEM harness is super easy. Mine (OEM) was plug and play with 3 plugs, run the wires through the grommet, and everything lines up perfectly.
I can give more info and pictures tonight. Or, there are a couple other threads on here with a ton of info.

What makes the OEM hitch a bitch? Price, installation cost? Also, on the E Bay link there is no Gen 2 harness listed?

. . . from this thread . . .

When I bought my OEM hitch, I was asking around at different shops to install it. After all, it's just a hitch. Bolt it up. What's the problem? I didn't have the time to do it myself. When it came down to it, I did install it myself and am I so glad that I did. For it being "just a hitch" there is a whole lot of detailed steps in following the factory instructions. I'm rather particular when it comes to things being done the right way, so I did everything perfectly as it was supposed to be done according to Infiniti. The install took a while and I had some thinking time. I mostly thought about all the steps thatI was doing and that any random shop I would have taken it to would not have done. They would have slapped it in and considered the job done without taking the extra steps of care.
My experience is from the 1st gen and maybe the 2nd gen is different. Knowing what I know now, I would only install the OEM hitch myself or have the dealer do it. Let U-Haul or somone else install it if it's an aftermarket hitch. In that case I think it's just a hitch and bolts right up.

This image highlights the hitch harness with blue. I thought there were 3, but looks like only 2 plugs. The OEM harness install is super easy. Empty the truck, plug it in, lay the wire, zip tie, run it throught a grommet on the trunk pan, and plug it into the OEM hitch. Crack a beer - you're almost done. Put the trunk back together.
