I took off my top engine cover to see everything underneath. The insulation foam was a bit rough. I am thinking just leave it off (the whole cover). Does it really have a function other than giving a cleaner look? And bonus, I won't be trapping in heat, and be able to see that no injectors, or anything else, are leaking.

The purpose of that in addition to heat management is also sound deadening. If you have removed it and it doesn't bother you, then I see no issue with leaving it off.

I have had mine off for a long time now with no issues.

Covers on engines first came to be when ignitions became what are known as LDI (Leathal Dose Ignitions) due to higher voltages used in newer cars. Always use caution when cover is removed and engine is running!

How would switching to direct ignition coils from a distributor cap setup be more dangerous? It's still a 12V system overall and spark plugs still fire at ~40,000 volts so the energy isn't that different. If anything a direct ignition setup is safer since there is no high voltage spark plug wire from the distributor cap. If you damage a wire leading to the coil on a modern setup, it's still 12V.

On my old Maxima, it was direct ignition and the front bank had a cover but the rear bank had all of the coils exposed as they ran between the intake manifold runners. If it truly was a danger, I'd think they cover both instead of only the one that's clearly visible when you pop the hood.
