Tilt steering problem

Hey, just got a used 2003 FX45 with 58k miles on it (no warranty), and I noticed that the steering wheel moves up and down about one inch if you push on it. I was wondering if this was normal? I found an Infiniti TSB for the tilt steering bushing, but I do not know if the dealership will perform the work for free if it is out of warranty. Anyone have any experience with this?

With a TSB the dealer should provide the service for free even if your FX is out of warranty. And the that 1inch traveling of the steering wheel is not normal and I suggest you go get it looked at.

Sorry Doc but if you are well out of your warranty period the dealership won't usually repair anything for free even with a tsb. Only with a safety recall or voluntary recall will they repair items after warranty free of charge. Your only real option is if this problem was noted during the warranty and not repaired. Of course, some dealerships will cut you some slack, especially if you are close to your coverage guidelines.

the one way that having the tsb helps is that if it describes the problem very well you can use the tsb to get pricing from a local service shop. The tsb provides them with a parts listing and the approximate time for the repair. You can get pricing from a good Infiniti shop and compare it with your local independant shop.
