Tilt steering motor noise

2004 FX 35. As my tilt wheel adjustment moves the wheel up and down, I hear an intermittent noise like ratcheting or gear grinding. However, the wheel does move to proper adjustment.

Welcome to the scene.
When my wheel moves up and down the motor noise is normal. When telescoping, the motor noise is louder. I suspect that new grease would solve it, but I don't use the telescoping feature enough to let it bother me. I use the auto adjust upon entry/exit, so I'm rather forgiving of what seems to be normal wear.

There are plastic bushings in the telescope tilt wheel. The bushings tend to wear out. Had mine replaced under warranty a couple years ago and very quite since.

Funny because I was just going to make a thread similar to this problem. My steering wheel won't go down at all and is making a weird noise when I use the switch. I'm pretty sure it goes up but doesn't seem right.. sounds like a grinding noise. Going to the dealer Tuesday because I hate how high the steering wheel is. I think the motor is bad and need to replace it or possibly adjust something in the column. Should be under warranty so I'm not worried.

i need to grease too, how do i take off that plastic piece that covers it and what kind of grease should i get?

I seem to have the same issue that when i turn off the FX and the steering wheel goes up it makes a noise like its going to get stuck. Im due for an oil change soon so when i go to Infiniti i will have them take a look at it. They prob will say nothing is wrong with it like dealers tend to do

Let us know what they say. Probably one of two responses:
"no, we don't notice any abnormal noise" or
"yep, that's the steering column. Unfortunately, we have to replace the whole thing. Did you bring your credit cards?"

So I'm getting my oil change and getting my wheels rotated and balanced and I told the service person about the steering wheel making a noise that appears that its getting stuck. Her response which I expected was "we will have to see if the mechanic can replicate the noise". At first I thought they would come back and say they did not hear anything but luckily the mechanic heard it.
The lady from the service department told me that it's the motor from the steering column and it has to be replaced. She told me that a new motor would be ordered and then replace it. Luckily my FX is still under warranty and they will cover everything. Maybe this is the issue that other members are having and best of luck getting them fixed.

there is a TSB on it, don't have time to find it right now.

So when I got my FX back the girl from the service department told me that the motor will be there on tuesday and to drop it off an they will give me a loaner. So then she told me that they have been changing alot of steering wheel motors on the FX And EX. So maybe that's the issue for many. Maybe some of you guys experiencing the same problems should go get it checked out before the warranty is up.

I went to the Dealer today and they replaced the steering wheel motor that makes it go up and down. Said they never heard of any problems like this for the 09+ so it was a first for them. Luckily they had the parts in stock and I only had to wait an hour.

Mine went bad too. I heard there was a recall for the 2nd gen's on this. The part that moves the steering in and out went bad and the whole thing wouldn't move.

So it's not just the telescoping range of motion causing problems, but the up/down too. I will inquire the next time I'm at the dealer, but without warranty I think I'll be roll'n as is.
