Throttle issue?

Hey guys, so i'm relatively new to the car world and most of the time if anything goes wrong i just take the car into shop.

However i'd like to get to know more/understand what actually goes on sometimes.

ANYWAY, the problem/question i have is:
Recently i took my car into the shop cause on occasion when i'd start the car, it would turn over, but then the rpm would kind of choke, and the car would die.
The guy at the shop said it was a throttle issue, cleaned the throttle, and raised my idle.

Can someone explain in somewhat simple terms what was going on.

Much Appreciated,
Cedric

The body can become dirty and possibly effect the the butterfly valve shut off in the TB (throttle body) itself, but most often the the issue lies with the MAF (mass air flow) sensor wire. When it becomes coated it will read incorrectly and can cause classic carb issues (stuttering, choking out etc.). Cleaning is relatively easy. Where is your idle falling now? A reset does sound a bit out of the ordinary.

I'll be able to let you know this weekend, I'm currently at school (aka i don't have my car with me).
It's been having this issue for about a year now, but gets worse in the cold. We already replaced the sparks about 4 months ago.

I would suggest clean the MAF sensor with Mass Airflow sensor cleaner or electrical contact spray cleaner. Then take the throttle body off the car and spray it with throttle body cleaner or brake part cleaner. If it too thirty, use a piece of rag and wipe it clean. Be gentle with the opening and closing of the butterfly valve when you're reaching in open and close when cleaning it.

Upper plenum cleaning would solved that issue.. You need to remove the intake and upper plenum and clean it. Just make sure NOT to be aggressive with the throttle's butterfly.
