Throttle body cleaning

I did not find a write-up on how to remove and clean the throttle bodies on the 2nd gens. I will be cleaning mine most likely this weekend, should I take the extra time and take pictures or is it not really worth it?

The video is good for how to get to the throttle body, but not really for cleaning. I've cleaned mine 2-3 times already and where most of the dirt gets is right where the butterfly valve is in the almost closed position. To get that clean, you have to open up the valve slowly and clean it there very well since that is where the majority of the build up is. This is also the hardest part which is not discussed in the video at all. If you clean all of this, the car will be running like new for a long period.
 
The job shouldn't take more than 30mins; so they shouldn't charge you more than an hour of labour (including 30 extra minutes for ripping you off). The material thats used is a queue tip and TB cleaner from the local hardware store (about $10). The shop I go to charges $125/hr; they would charge me about $70 to do the cleaning. Thats in Canadian $.
 
i though you were not supposed to open the valve at all? my question is how good can you clean it if you can press onto the valve
 
Some dealers offer the service for $150.

you can DIY it yourself, and Hammermill is is OK to press on the valve BUT DO NOT LET IT SNAP CLOSED AND BE VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT MARK IT SCRATCH IT ETC ETC. if you do so YOU WILL KNOCK OFF THE CALIBRATION OF THE VALVE AND IT WILL MESS UP YOUR IDLING, THROTTLE, ETC.

that being said, I've had it done at dealer twice and had no issues :)
 
Jordan, how many km do you have on your FX? I ask because my dealer replaced my TBs instead of cleaning them. They're like "no it cant be cleaned or repaired. It'll cost you $2k for part and labour to replace them".. Went through a battle but finally got it done under warranty. And at the time of replacement my car had about 80k km on it; but the symptoms started at around 55k. not sure how often it should be done.
 
Nima, you have 80,000 Kim's, that is what I have, no problems so far.

I believe Jordan has around 58,000 miles (100,000 Kim's)

About 55k. I didn't have an issue with them I just wanted them cleaned. I'd say check them for deposits every 10k (year) or so?

when i clean my throttle bodies can i put my car in the "on" position with the engine NOT running of course and stepping on the throttle and will the valves open? ive done this on other cars with electronic throttle bodies and it worked out fine.

Just so you know, dealership just charged me $200 to do this simple task which I am more than capable of performing in my garage. Lesson learnt

Just cleaned my throttle bodies tonight, 2012 FX35. Yes, if you put the car in the "on" position, with the transmission in drive and hold down the accelerator, the butterfly valve will open. Made it easy to clean off the ridge of deposits. No reset necessary, definitely made a big difference in throttle response and much smoother idle.
