Thinking of switching from 335i to FX35(maybe 45?)

Hey all, just trying to get some feedback on this decision. My 08 335i recently ran out of warranty and I have been thinking about getting something more reliable that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix or maintain. I've been considering going with an SUV this time around since I have a dog and I like the higher ride height and the only one that I like that I don't feel is too soccer momish is the FX. I haven't driven one yet but am going to look at them tomorrow, am I crazy to make this switch or should it be a pretty smooth transition? I just love how aggressive these things look, and you don't see too many on the road unlike the 3-series. I've been looking at 08 CPO'd ones, the only one my local dealer has is orange on orange which I'm not likely to buy but would like to drive just to see if I like the feel of it...Also is there anything I need to look out for when looking at these? The driving experience is as close as you'll find to a car in a crossover. Keep in mind it is still a 4500lbs vehicle but it holds its own for what it is. A few suspension tweaks and you will be even happier with it if you decide to buy one. Used 45 prices are comparable to the 35s too.

I have a 2006 BMW 325XI and 2003 Infiniti FX45. Get the FX45, FX50 or FX50S. Best trade-off for reliability, price and performance.
 
I came out of an '07 3 Series too before getting into the FX. Great car, but I knew in the long run, reliability and maintenance would be the downer for me. The BMW was an impulse lease for me. The FX I wanted since 2003. Being young and foolish at the time, I regret not getting the FX to begin with. I've gone through seven cars in the past eight years, lol. The FX is the best "all around' vehicle I have ever had. The FX would be a perfect for fit you, due to the appropriate reasons you listed above. In stock form the FX is pretty amazing and becomes more incredible as you mod it. The orange one you are referring to is Autumn Copper and Brick interior and is pretty hard combo to find. That combo usually impresses everyone that sees or sits in it. If you're looking at '08s then there's nothing really to look out for. Perfect vehicle to begin with! :balanced:
 
Before all else, test drive - which it seems like is your plan. That will seal the deal for you, I think.

In terms of what to look for - use this forum for finding common maintenance or repair items. The FX is pretty darn reliable. I have 110,000 miles on mine and have had some repair items but none that left me stranded on the road.

If you have plans to modify the car at all, then consider the FX35 since it shares an engine and drivetrain with the 350Z and G35. Most any engine mods that apply to those cars will also work on the FX. If you plan to stay stock, the 45 or the 50S are the more "fun" choices because of the power.

Stay away from any FX that has had cooling problems in the past. Other than that, check the brakes and ask about miles on the shocks (replace at 60K). A new set of tires will run 800-1200, depending on what you get.

Your story is how most of us got here. The FX has unmatched class and versatility. These cars have plenty of luxury and the only single possible negative is a stiff ride. Other luxury SUVs have softer rides, but suffer in the sport/performance aspect. I'm not complaining at all or arguing for a softer ride, as I prefer the FX perfect balance. This is just a common point general reviews. Also, published reviews have difficulty predicting reliability and maintenance - easy wins for the FX.
 
youll miss the speed....fx45 will be quick, but if you can afford to go 09+ FX50, I would do it. Keep in the mind the 09FX35 is faster than the 03-08 FX45.

If its not all about speed, then just get one that you like!
 
I PM'd you some of my thoughts...

Honestly 2nd gen FX is the way to go. 1st gens have a nicer exterior (personal opinion) or at the very least a more classically proportioned looking exterior, but the interior is lacking (it's a late 90s/early 00 design). The interior quality of an E53 is much better in comparison to the 1st gen FX. Again the 2nd gens FX's interior is much better and can rival the E70s in terms of looks (not sure about quality/durability though). An E53 can barely hang with a first gen, in back to back driving sessions the FX45 was noticeably quicker in a straight line (4.5 vs 4.4; the 4.6 or 4.8 would be different stories IMO), but I was able to corner harder and faster with the E53, however that may be a confidence thing as the E53 felt more solid in the twisties.

A 335i like I said before is a sports sedan; if you used it as such (corners, straights, etc) then no SUV/SAV will be able to match it stock for stock. If you enjoy turns the 1st gen FX is good, not great, and certainly nowhere near the capabilities of your E90.

There is no doubt that the FX is as low maintenance vehicle as they come. Parts are cheap in comparison to the Germans, even compared to Lexus. I personally enjoyed my ownership experience, but will I truly miss it...I think only when I see another one (which has become a very common sighting where I live); but then I think about how my interior went south in a year and a half of use and I chuckle a little; I also think about the rising gas prices and how 15.5mpg just doesn't match the current oil price trends. Such a great looking vehicle, but man did they skimp out inside; it could have been stellar. I have met a few of the local FXers, that's what I'll miss the most. But then again I can attend any one of their meets (far and few inbetween but fun).

Like jumbo said, drive them all. Then make a decision that fits your lifestyle (needs, driving style, wants, etc).
