Sunroof troubles 08 FX45

Hi All. It's been a long time since I last posted anything. Last week I decided to sell my 08 FX45 and out of the blue my sunroof stopped working. It stuck about 2 inches from being closed. So I ran the reset procedure. That closed it up and caused the motor to grind loudly and the whole sunroof to be stuck. I took it to the dealership and they determined I will need a $2400+ repair which consists of replacing the rail and the motor. They said the gears on the motor are not catching the rail. They could not go into specifics on precisely what part broke. But their policy is to replace the whole thing which often means replacing more than is necessary and paying above market price for parts (They want to charge $1500+ for an $1100 rail and $500+ for a $350 motor). But they did offer a 20% discount on parts and labor (how generous!).

I called a sunroof specialist in the area and he believes he can fix it for $750 worst case scenario. Now, I'm no economist, but I would much rather pay $750 than $2400. So, off to the specialist I go.

I was wondering if any of you had the same failure? The dealer tells me this happens to maybe one in a thousand vehicles (lucky me!). I tried searching on how-to's related to repairing the sunroof but came up empty.

What are the odds that it happens the exact week I decide to sell it? I try not to dwell on these things. I typically just shake it off and move on. What good does it do to get upset or wonder why me, why now? Anyway I would appreciate any feedback, personal experiences, recommendations, etc. I posted this question over on infinitifx.org just to get maximum exposure to my question. Hope nobody minds.

Thanks all.
