What do alignments usually run for the Gen 1 AWD's?
I was sure I needed to get one because of the vibration and slight drift on the freeway, but after this thread, I'm betting its this slight adjustment thats needed rather than an entire alignment, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to have done either way, as its been a long while since I had one done.

alignment wouldnt help the shake but in California it runs from 50-125. I pay 50 because of a discount. Usually if you go to american tire or other places they will ask from 70-85 for the alignment.
Also check your tires if their worn you will get noticeable vibrations especially on the freeway.

A lot of places give free "alignment checks". They run the numbers and tell you how far off you are.

Nice. Luckily the Toyo Open Country A/T II I have on the FX are running strong. Those are the best tires ever. The tread has worn slow and smooth over the last 5 years. Look hella aggressive. Still give me 17 mpg's. and I am covered for trips to the snow and muddy situations (when they rarely come up).
Yeah I pay between $70-$85 when I take it to sears but it might need road force balancing to fix the shake, I paid a little over $100 for that.

Not sure if this is everywhere, but as of September '12, Firestones in the Pittsburgh area still offered lifetime alignments for about $175. So you get the alignment and you can take it back as often as you want (they recommend 3 times per year) for a check, and they'll tweak it for free if it's off.
If heard a few negatives about firestone.....a few from actual employees as well....basicaly to sum up this is what I have heard on both sides:
They give lifetimes because at the end of the day they make more money because what they do is they really inspect the car right before algnment....if there is anything at all even minor wrong, they will not do the alignment and then you must fix it before they will do it...whether it is a bad tie rod, slightly uneven worn tire, and a bunch of other things they inspect. So then they bring up the issue, you get it fixed, it costs more, and then you get your "free" alignment. Business that run like this worry me because sometimes I have a hard time trusting people like this because who knows how bad the issue is if at all, did they cause an issue just to possibly get more money and make you do it to keep the free alignments for life, etc. One employee from there that is a friend told me I will never believe all the things they do and how much money they make because of the free alignment for life.

While I definitely agree that they try to up sell every time with completely unnecessary service, I've never had them refuse to do the alignment for an issue (I've done about 6 over the past 2 years between our 2 cars). They always want to change the oil, flush the tranny, flush the radiator, change the brake fluid -whatever. I just say, "thanks for the advice, but no" and go along my way.
So I've been having the same issue as others here. My steering shakes at around 60-65 and. I have new rotors pads , new tires and wheels and just got an alignment. This all happened with my stock 18's also with the new pads and rotors.
U think I should give the tightening of the steering bolt a try ? I was about to take my car back to discount tire for rebalanced of my wheels.

Definatly worth a try this is one of the easiest fixes you can do only takes a minute or two.
Crap, Is it 20+ MM socket, the largest in my tool set is 19mm and 7/8th?
What is the easiest method to get to the bolt it appears I can turn the wheel and get there but someone said not to do that ? Instead jack the car up and do it from below ?
you can do it either way, if you find a short socket i belive its a 22mm socket not sure. You can just turn the wheel all the way and get a long ratchet and tighten it. Or you can take off the rack and pinion cover its has 2 bolts and 2 push clips.
so I tried to do this yesterday and failed. I ended up taking my wheel off to access the bolt. Once I did that there was a pipe just above that kept me from getting the socket all the way on
I tried to loosen the bolt above and it starts to leak steering fluid. I tried to move the pipe but never got the clearance I needed to get to the steering bolt. in the picture the pipe that was in the way is in grey/silver just above the bolt. Any one lese have this issue ?

Try using a 24 mm box end wrench.
or a wobble socket. But ive never had any problems, like i said take off the rack and pinion cover

It's much easier to access the bolt from the bottom. Remove two screw clips and lower the splash guard cover, then it's a piece of cake from there.
