Speeding Ticket Advice

Hello fellow members, how's it going? I was wondering if you could give me advice on going about a speeding ticket. First and foremost, is it worth the time and money to fight a speeding ticket given by highway patrol? he clocked me doing 72 in a 50 as I was switching lanes in order to avoid crashing into the car in front of me(which nearly came to a stop due to hitting a pothole) and also avoid from cutting the car off in the other lane ? Any advice would be appreciated thank you in advance!

i would say hire a good lawyer. i got speeding ticket on a bridge last year. i was doing 45 and it was 30. but my lawyer took care of it

Yea I probably will, I'm not really worried about expenses, I'm worried about getting 6 points :(

for 22 over you may want to plea bargain -> plead guilty and ask for the offense to be dropped down (since 20 over goes into a more serious category than say, 5 over). You'll end up having to pay but won't get as many points...
Like jeeta said, it's best to get a lawyer that is experienced in the area in which you got a ticket. IF you want, I can get a contact for you... My father's an attorney in NY and we have "a guy" for speeding tickets depending on if it was in NYC, or westchester, etc.
PM me if interested and I can get his contact info for you (let me know where you got the ticket)

Not for lack of speeding but it has been a really long time since I have gotten a ticket so I am not sure how much things have changed or the current specifics in your area. In my ticket acquiring prime the officer had to show up to court. If the cop showed and you had no lawyer you were definitely getting the ticket. What happened instead for me was a 100% rate of the cop not showing up 6 times in a row and each time the ticket was dismissed. One of them was a really severe fine. Eventually they made extra provisions so police could more easily make court times and then a lawyer was definitely needed. You spend money either way but like you said it is the points that are the critical thing to avoid and I would advise a lawyer. Good luck.

So you nailed your brakes, switched lanes, then floored it? And before you could come back down to cruising speed, the cop got you? If the flow of traffic was 60, couldn't you have just gone back up to 60 to avoid slowing down the car you cut off?

Don't know about NY, but in GA you can plead no contest and you pay the fine but don't get the points. This is only for minor speeding tickets, nothing reckless and can only be done every few years. If you plead no contest and the state attorney sees that you get busted every year, they can refuse to accept the plea.

I was at a considerable distance behind the car that hit the pothole so I didn't apply the brakes but the guy at my right side was coming up fast so I had to pick up speed or else he would have been literally sitting on my back bumper

Sounds like you got stuck in a bad situation. Have to avoid hitting the car in front of you, but also avoid the car now behind you from hitting you. I guess the officer didn't care to hear any of that?

He didn't even want to hear me out, asked for my license, asked if I knew for what I was being stopped which I replied to with a no, where he proceeded to tell me and walked away

have you had any tickets in the last 5 yrs? if so then your chance of getting the tix dismissed is reduced proportionally. what about defensive driving or deferred adjudication plea without getting points or having it going on your driving records? in texas, one can get a traffic lawyer for $40-80 to represent him/her in the initial hearing and then try to plea bargain or have the tix dismissed. either way, you'll lose a day if it get resolved. if not, then you'll have to come back for a trial by jury (better option to facing the judge). the lawyer's fee will be more then and you would have wasted another day. if you lose then you'll also have to pay court costs.
