Speaker covers "I want to see it painted black"

Like most of our 1st Gen FX's my speaker covers were sun faded to almost a bluish gray color. While it didn't look bad I certainly wanted to match the nice black dashboard - so I went to Michaels and picked up some fabric dye spray paint (tulip aerosol). So far it seems to be pretty dark and I tested the surface underneath and surprisingly not much went through. It is a pretty heavy paint. Next up I am going to paint my door covers black to continue the black brown blend.. I tried to pull the speaker cover from the door and maybe it's just me but I could not get that thing to come off. Trying to pry it off I actually popped part of my door panel off instead. Has anybody taking off their door speaker cover? Wow!
If I do have to paint it while it's on the door I guess I should do it before I replace the speakers.

Seems to remember the door speaker grille is screw in on the backside. Easy enough to pull the door panel to take a quick peeks. Certainly a lot quicker than masking the door panel for spraying.

I wanted to do this as well. My door speaker covers are so dirty and I can't clean them. Especially being beige, people hitting them with their feet getting in and out, impossible to keep clean.
What spray did you use from Micheal's?

I used the tulip brand the aerosol can. It did well and I used two coats. I cut a small strip of tape to cover the bose logo.

perfect tanks. I will look into it next week and get this done before we get any snow on the ground. I wish I had black interior in this vehicle damn it!!! Why wouldn't they make white FX with black interior in first gens is beyond me!!!

Well still in the middle of removing my speaker covers on the doors but they look to be held in by clips. I pryed two of them and both of them snapped... I guess when I'm done with this I'm gonna need to replace the speaker Clips or figure out something else. Anybody know what clips that go into speaker covers?

Most likely you have to figure out a way to fasten the grille again. Got a closeup picture of the clip?

Wouldn't it be easier to just tape it off? Especially if these clips are prone to breaking

I think the clips and the speaker covers are one piece. I thought about taping it off but the painter's tape will not adhere to the plastic door trim. ..

Indeed the grille came out looking really nice.

To re-attach the grille, I would position the grille back onto the door panel, drill a pilot hole into the center of the clip, and a washer & short screw to fasten the grille back on the the door panel. If the broken portion of the clip spins as you making the pilot hole, remove it and drill the pilot hole directly onto the remaining clip on the grille and fasten it with washer & screw. Be sure to use a short screw so that is not coming through to the front side of the grille.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised when the tape wouldn't hold up. Think that sounds like a good idea, I will try that probably over the weekend. If I get time throughout the rest of the week I'll go ahead and pop off the old ones and go ahead and try to get them painted. This sucks I have to remove the door trim though. Unlike the dashboard covers. They were super easy for anybody wondering.

Ok, I finally got around to taking off that door panel and reattaching the speaker cover. I had some small screws and just screwed in from the reverse side of the panel. Came out pretty good. However the speaker cover has been sitting in my garage now for a couple of weeks and has gotten kind of dusty but I think it turned out okay. I did have time to wrap some interior trim and I think in a little bit I'll be swapping out my brakes and rotors. I'm also going to pull off the rest of the speaker covers, spray them and put them back on later this evening. Holidays are great
