I have a 2005 FX35AWD. It's got about 105K miles. I've been quoted $300 for spark plug change by a shop(not dealer). Is that a fair prices?

Seems high. Plugs are $50 for a set of 6 and it's no more than an hour of labor. So depending on the labor rate, it really shouldn't be more than $150 or so.

If the book says u have to pull the plenum then its like 2 -3 hours total. I'll look it up later on all data.

Yeah removing the upper plenum and lower collector I think is the official way of doing it.

So the labor is like 2 hours or w/e.

I wouldn't pay 300 bucks considering how easy the job is. If you are doing it yourself there is no need to remove the plenum, just look below the sides and find the coil packs undo the 10mm nut holding each one in and remove the plug.

some Fx's leak oil into the spark plug area. I would suggest removing the last 2 spark plugs from each side and seeing if their is any puddle, if so, you have to change the valve cover too.

Just pull the coil pack and check for oil. If there oil, the seal around the spark plug on the valve cover leaks. It only make sense to have the valve cover replaced. Replacing the valve cover requires the spark plus removal, so you save yourself come labor $. $300 for spark plug is way to high in my opinion. I think $150 is fair. If you can turn a ratcket to remove and reassemble things, I think you can change the spark plug yourself.

Wow, never knew the official way was to remove upper and lower plenum. I wonder what the reason is for that. I change them myself and it takes 45 minutes without removing plenum. But I don't have an engine cover to remove, so maybe an hour with one.

 No, changing spark plugs doesn't require the removal of the upper/lower plenum. Someone misunderstood/misread. The factory service manual was making a referral the the plenum removal section for the removal of the engine cover.

The actual labor rate MIGHT say u need to pull the plenum but you don't need to on a rwd/awd vq35. But if labor rates pay you to, then as a mechanic your gonna claim u did.

We do that often with bumpers. We got paid to pull the bumper and we normally can work around it.

Spark plugs isn't hard and very little to screw up. But if u do... Most likely cross thread a plug. U will hate yourself for days.

Exactly. What type of spark plugs do you intend to replace OEMs with? Favorites are NGK/DENSO IRIDIUMs. Some prefer Copper. You don't touch the plenum at all. Just use a 10mm socket to remove the bolts from the coil packs. Once the bolts are off you can just remove the coil packs, then insert the spark plug socket to remove the plug, insert the new spark plugs to 20ft-lb torque, then install the coil pack and torque the bolts to 64-95lb and you are set for another 65K miles.

Seriously this is one of the easiest DIYs anyone who knows/owns basic tools can do. took me an hour on my VQ45 and V8 has two spark plugs towards the back that are not the easiest one to remove, something you don't have to worry about on a V6.

I've changed plugs on my other cars before (JEEP Grand cherokee, and Acura MDX) and it was pretty straight forward but I was hesitant to do it myself on the FX35 because I read at few places that 2 of the 6 plugs were hard to get to and it can be a PITA if you don't have all the right tools.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll see if I can do it myself.
