Smoking the Chrome?

Has anyone seen or heard of smoking the chrome. The place I got my tails done mentioned it to me but it is easy to believe but I have never seen it. He said basically since my car is black that it will closely match the paint color but then have a black chrome effect????
 
there has been many threads concerning this topic in the "wheels and suspension" section, but here is the latest w/ one of the members getting it done with a special paint.

The only concern with "easy" is does it withstand the elements well? and will it peel?

Oh not the rims but the chrome trim. I am getting those painted to match the car. He was working on the tails and mentioned them to me??
 
on my sports model, the rears are "smoked". but some pieces are still chrome. Some members have either taken the lamp assembly. apart and painted it or just applied a "tint" on the outside of the brake lights.

ok, it would involve removing the pieces and painting them right? so it would be similar to this

one thing I can say is, all the chrome trim on the fx is expensive to replace, & the rear moldings are a job to remove, if your gonna do it you want to make sure it's gonna come out great & be durable enough to not look like crap in a year. I'd recommend having them professionally done. a grille is different, no matter how wrong things went $150 fixes it with an ebay spare... all the chrome can be much more than that, especially on a tech package & if it don't come out beautiful it'll cheapen the car big time... only do it if you can do it right would be my advice
 
Yea. I am just getting them paint matched. i didnt want to take any chances. i stopped by the shop and he did a nissan emblem with the tint spray and it came out almost a pearl black. I placed it over my emblem and didnt like the look
