Smelly fx35 Ac mold and burning smell from engine.

Recently picked up a pristine fx35, and I love it with 1 exception.

It stinks so bad.

The Ac has a bit of a rankness to it that isn't always noticeable. Every once in a while when stopped you will catch a whiff of nasty mold.

I have tried running 2 cans of Lysol through the vents and changed the cabin filter but it did not seem to help.

Also when driving for extended periods I notice a bit of smoke and a burning smell emanating from the engine. When I pop the hood I can't locate it tho. I have been monitoring the oil, and it doesn't seem to be leaking. I don't see any fluids dripping, and no components are moist.

Any ideas on how to resolve the stankness?

You know what I just found strange while installing my battery tender; if you look into the battery box you can clearly see the in-cabin filter. Doesn't the battery "off-gas" ? I'm sure that gas doesnt smell like a watermelon Jolly Rancher.
Maybe that's the smell you're getting (my 2 cents)

If that was the case all our FX's would smell? Additionally, the battery only out gasses when its charging and it only has to carge for a few minutes to bring the battery voltage back from the few seconds of cranking? From then on the alternator basically does all the DC loads while running.

Make sure to turn off recirc. Moisture builds up when you leave it on recirculate. I had the same issue a few years back and after changing the cabin filter and running the system on fresh air only for a while, it went away.

Check the battery it's located right by cabin air intake. I had an issue with smell in cab and it turned out to be a bad battery.
