Slamming needs a 2nd job or new Employment

Can you do PDR? Seems like something to do easily on the side without taking all your time away from a real search. Set your own pace and time schedule. Everybody wants it or needs it (they should) and you can set your own prices if you're starving or not.
If you were in LA, I'd give you a real job too.

Good call. I need PDR right now...

I own a bodyshop in ny and things are def off compared to what they once were, and this is pretty much industry wide. I never take hours away from any of my guys, I don't even dock them if they take an hour here or there and miss a day once in a while within reason but it has just gotten harder and harder to make ends meet. costs are going up while insurance payouts are getting tighter and tighter and they steer more and more work towards there "own" shops. then more people are hesitant to spend too and more are willing to shop and settle for less for a better price, the industry is def hurting right now, insurance companies are the ones really making all the good money now a days.

pdr is awesome if you have the patience and you could make a really good living and at your own control if you really apply yourself, where else can you make over $150 an hour with minimal investment in tools and equiptment

^ Ha funny, Absolute truth in everything you said Turbo. People just are not spending, or they are pocketing their insurance checks. I would love to learn PDR but not a skill I have under the belt at the moment.

+1 turbo, right on the money, but I think it also comes down to the way a business is run by the owner/manager etc., how it's being promoted and wether whatever service is being offered is being conducted in an honest way, without trying to milk it, thus ensuring that an average customer feels at ease rather than taken advantage of. It's not always the fact that people don't or won't pay a top dollar, if necessary, it's if they feel the amount is justified and the work quoted is really necessary. I remember in my last job, running a few different stores, I often found some employees in different locations saying completely wrong or inaccurate stuff, thinking that by charging more, the company and the brand will do better, when in fact customers would do their part of researching and putting them in a spotlight by saying what other location or vendor is offering. There is no perfect recipe for any business to be more or less successful, but it definitely starts with people who run it and work. You can be the most loyal, honest and devoted employee or a boss out there but if you deal with people who don't share the same business acumen, then it's just tough to make it work. Reason why I walked away from my company and just like many of my friends and people out there am trying to find a new career.

I hope things will get better for you or you will find the next best thing there! Juts be patient :) even though it seems tough to do!

Thank you Lucki, The field I'm in is a skilled nitch and a specific artform at that. Maybe it's the best thing that could of happened and I just don't know it yet. Trying to stay focused and positive. Won't give up, def a fight that I'll keep swinging in till my arms fall off. I feel like you guys are very educated and right on the ball. I truely appeciate all the kind words and encouragement from the bottom of my heart.

So I'm asking some advice from the brilliant minds here. I have three job offers.

1) Giant company with lots of hours, 25min from home, no gaurrantee dollar amount. Lowest on the pay scale, potential to gain management within a year and start a new department, group health plan

2) A small, growing company with lots of hours, 10min from home, gaurrantee + commission, middle on the pay scale, potential for management within a year for second location, pays 1/2 of group health plan

3) A bigger company with lots of hours, 20min from home, gaurrantee + commission, highest on the pay scale, start with management of second location now, NO health care, pay my own taxes.

Really difficult decision, and no crystal ball available, looking for some advice because I truely don't know...

I would figure out what the cost would be to provide my own healthcare and then look at how the pay stacks up. Most money doesn't count if your healthcare costs bring it down to the bottom in actual income.

With that said, I would lean 2 or 3 because of the guaranteed salary. Opportunity for advancement is always good if it's advancement that you actually want.

In the end it all comes down to feel and where you feel you'd be most content.

i also say go with either 2 or 3. check how much you exactly would have to pay in job 3 when it comes to health. And also they might have several different types of coverages so the prices might be different. Also try to see whats the percentage in commission for both jobs.

Are you equally interested in each of your options? Assume the same money, benefits and location - which one would you be happier doing? Personally I'd take a job I liked over one that pays more if I could live comfortably on both salaries.

I would probably lean more towards option 2, considering it's a small company, but like you said growing fast, I think there will be more potential along the way, also you would have your health insurance already set up, and someone who can deal with any potential issues assigned to it, instead of you tackling any health issues on your own.

But at the end, you will know which of the 3 choices gives you that right gut feeling! :)

It all about fit. You will grow and excel in an environment you are comfortable with, a company where you are a contributor. If everything lines up the money will find you.

Some of the happiest workers I know are at start ups. They are happier without big corporate politics and drama. That's other people's opinion though. Go where it feels right and responsible. Health benefits are a huge plus and they only get more important with time. Does your "wife" have medical?

sorry to hear about all of this man. This is indeed a hard time across all industries. All the best of luck to you.
