Hi guys, just looking for some information about a skunk smell thats coming from the engine bay of my FX35. Recently, I have been getting the skunk smell while normal driving which comes through the vents inside the cabin. Anyone else have a problem with this before? I did not hit any animals and checked all around for any animal carcass.. Someone told me it could be the coolant but I smelled the coolant and its green, and smells normal..

It's a 2004 Infiniti Fx35 AWD with 46k miles.

Thanks

Differential fluid smells pretty bad. Transmission fluid doesn't smell great, but not really like skunk. I would pull the splash shield and check for any leaks.

Not sure but the smell only starts in the engine bay, and if I hit the recirculate button the smell goes away, but I dont want to use it constantly as it triggers the AC button to constantly run

Just throwing out there and it could be something else. Could it be possible the Cabin filter needs changing or the CATs failing? If it were the CATs wouldn't there be warning lights?

It could be a bad battery. I had a battery go bad before and it smelled like rotten eggs. I know you said it smells like a skunk but it could be a possibility. Check your battery.

Bad cats are more of a rotten egg or raw gas smell. If it's coming from the engine through the vents, I still would guess fluid burning off. Or something died in there, less likely. Change the cabin filter as someone said. It's cheap and if it gets contaminated, it will smell.

If its got a slightly sweet, in a bad way, smell to it then you may have a coolant leak. Check your reservoir the next few days. Had this on an iroc I had and it drive me nuts until I figured it out.

Thanks for the input. I might just go ahead and replace the coolant completely as there are no leaks anywhere that I looked around the radiator area. Ill post back to see if its fixed
