  • SERVICE INFORMATION Scratch Shield is a newly developed scratch-resistant clear coat which "heals" by itself when the vehicle gets a small scratch in the clear coat. If the scratch reaches the color base coat, however, it will not "heal". Scratch Shield was implemented for the first time in the U.S. with the 2008 EX35, 2009 FX35/50, 2009 G37 Sedan and Coupe. All vehicles that have scratch shield clear coat carry a label which is located underneath the hood. See this bulletin for further detail.

This bulletin does not apply to 2010 models. Only 2009 and 2011 models. 2010 models are not equipped with Scratch Shield Paint.

PAINT REFINISH FOR SCRATCH SHIELD
SERVICE INFORMATION
Scratch Shield is a new developed scratch-resistant clear coat which heal by itself when the vehicle
gets the small scratch.
If the scratch reaches color base coat, it will not heal.
Image of small scratch is like a scratch that gets after going to washing machine.
Scratch Shield will be implemented for all 2009 Infiniti models for the first time in US.
Authorized paint suppliers

Nissan is working with refinish paint vendors to develop approved materials and procedures for proper refinishing of vehicles with Scratch Shield. To ensure proper color matching, adhesion, and long term wear characteristics, vehicles needing paint refinish work must be refinished with products that have been tested and approved by Nissan.
At the time of this publication, the following refinish paint manufacturers have provided materials and procedures, which meet Nissan requirements:

If your paint system supplier does not have Infiniti approved Scratch Shield refinish
products, specific technical advice can be acquired from the local distributor
of the paint suppliers listed on the previous page. If your paint supplier is not approved and you need to obtain refinish materials from one of the approved vendors, you will also need to purchase the necessary primers, reducers, hardeners and base coat from that distributor.

Current refinish materials are designed to work as a system and products from different vendors should not be intermixed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
When repairing a panel with the Scratch Shield refinish products, follow the guidelines below.
・ Edge to edge refinish for clear coat is recommended.
・ Acceptable blending could occur the area of sight (ex: rocker area); and the upper portion of the quarter panel sail area (junction of roof and quarter panel) as part of a full quarter panel refinish.
And please conduct supplementary dry for the blending part before polishing.
・ Please polish the refinished area by the recommended procedures of your paint supplier.
・ Technical Information and Material Availability
For specific technical advise, or if you have any difficulty obtaining refinish materials, the paint suppliers can be contacted directly at the following numbers.

I hope that anyone on here that has had or getting any body work done on their 2009 and 2011 FX35/50 follow this bulletin. If not followed and the bodyshop applies a regular clear coat instead of the scratch shield clear coat, you'll notice a slight difference unmatched in the way the clear coat looks over the paint. My friend's G37 has scratch shield clear coat, and he didn't have it resprayed with the approved refinish materials and the clear coat looks and feels different. There is an elastic resin embedded in all Scratchshield Clear Coats.

That's one reason I didn't want to take any risks and use the base and clear coat nissan touch up paints specifically for our cars....I assume all the above is built into the touch up stuff too since it comes with two touch up bottles.

Looks like the 2010's got the short end of the stick on this one.

I am so happy 2010 doesn't have self healing bull shit :-)
It won't work any way. And will be pain in a ass toremove swirl marks or take care fo that paint.

My friend has 09 FX50 and he hates the self healing crap.

I've got an 09 fx50s in my shop right now, doing a side hit. just found out that the 4 doors on the 09 ups are aluminum like the hood, 03-08's only the hood is aluminum.

the scratch shield clear coat is a ceramic based clear coat. it is a harder finish than a regular clear coat. there aren't really any drawbacks to the ceramic clear, it's harder the way a powder coat finish is usually harder than a regular paint finish. it does cost about twice what a conventional clear coat costs. if the car already has ceramic clear then def should repair with the same...

SO what's the general take on the clear coat or self heal resin. Pro's Con's? Sorry if this has been a topic discussed in detail. Link?

Only thing I noticed is that the scratch shield clear coat looks like it's more prone to scratches and rockchips. It's sort of on the soft side. I have noticed on a few occasions that the scratch shield seems to work. My mother scratch the door behind the handle with her ring, and a couple of weeks later that scratch was almost near gone. It needs heat to work properly. Basically when you get a scratch and the heat from the sun heats up the clear coat, the resin in the clear coat basically microscopically melts around the scratch and fills the scratch in. Thus getting rid of it or mostly clearly it up.

Here's some information:

Here are some customer before and after shots I got from nicoclub.com:

Some will question this though.

the scratch shield works for me really well, theres no visible swirls to this day and I've had the car for quite a while and even ran it through those car washes (on accident) before =]

I love it too. Friends are amazed of no swirl marks. Plus clay baring literally takes everything out even deeper scratches imo because the friction from claying I think.

If there is too much friction, it needs more lube in the bottle it came with:nurse:
