Rusted Rotors?!?!

I got brand new rotors all around about 6 mos ago. Within 2 mos, they were totally rusted over. I have 2 questions - what kind of paint (black) would you recommend and do I have to remove the rust before painting? I'd MUCH rather not remove the rust and just paint over it. You guys have any ideas? I can try to post a pic later...

How bad is the rust? Can you post a photo? Painting rotors is not recommended. It is normal that oxidation would develop especially after a car wash which eventually gets rubbed off with the use of the car. If the rust is in between the air cooled sandwiched metal plates, you just leave that alone unless if it is really bad and starts to flake.

I'm thinking the rust is on the part that bolts up to the wheel, not the actual rotor itself. You can paint it but i think you should remove the rust first

The rust is super-fine, not like the rough, gritty stuff. It's not the type that gets rubbed off after car wash or use. Also it's not where the brakepad touches the rotor.. just around the rest of it.

No, always garaged. That's the crazy part - this only took a few months to get coated over like that.

Would Coke work for something like this or any other recommended way to remove the rust? Sorry for all the questions - not much of a DIY'er when it comes to cars. I've been wanting to take off wheels and re-torque spacers, so this might be decent timing.

If you needed a solid job, jack up the car and remove the wheels.

1. Apply CRC Brakleen - Brake Parts Cleaner. You can buy this in O'Rilley Auto Parts or online here:

2. After the rust goes off from the CRC Brakeleen, you can apply WD40 and use wirebrush or sandpaper to remove stubborn rust.
3. Once you have bare metal, you can prepare to paint the rotor hat. Use a dedicated caliper paint.

While you are at it, you might want to paint your calipers as well. It looks corroded as well. I always make it a habit to do a heavy wash and underbody wash after heavy snows especially knowing that in NY, they apply heavy amounts of salt in the streets in winter.
