Rust on Stillen exhaust

Hello

I purchased a Stillen cat-back exhaust from Stillen on 06/21/2009 and had it installed 2 weeks later. This wee i took a quick look under the car and found rust all over the stainless steel pipes. I have some pics but can't seem to put them up. if someone can help me with I would greatly appreciate it. i can email the pics to them and have them edit into this post. (Please email me)

I immediately called and emailed stillen for warranty and they refused to replace the system. This is what they wrote back
Roshan,

Perhaps there was a misunderstanding in my last email to you. There is no warranty for surface rust. Unless there is a hole created by rust that you can either see light through or put your finger through there is no warranty. Because you live in what is known as the “rust belt” and the roads are salted every winter, rust and corrosion is a big problem for automobiles. After the spring thaw, the road salt is still present. Every time a car goes through a puddle, the underside of the car gets treated to a salt water spray. Our warranty does not cover environmental conditions caused by the weather. A stock exhaust can completely rust out in one winter season. A stainless steel exhaust may have surface rust, but will not rust through for maybe a decade. Since this is simply a cosmetic condition that is correctable, I suggest that you use steel wool on the exhaust tube to remove the surface rust. You should also wipe down the exhaust tips and muffler cans and polish them with a quality polish such as Mother’s or Meguiars to maintain their appearance.

I am furious that I spent all this money on a stainless steel exhaust that rusted within 6 months and before any winter and salting on the roads. Can anyone suggest what i can do to get it replaced by Stillen. Anyone else had this problem and what was the outcome from Stillen. I do plan on placing a formal complaint on BBB.

thanks in advance

Is there anything I can say to convince Stillen to replace it, it has been less than 6 months. Anyone else have any luck with stillen switching it out for them?

thanks

Yup, had a similar problem with a Stillen exhaust for my 97 Pathfinder...rust started weeks after install. Would not do anything about it. Had a number of items from them that had problems: rear sway bar U clamp break, performance brake discs repeatedly warped, and reports of cracked headers. I stay well away from Stillen since b/c of poor materials and customer service. Sorry to hear that things haven't changed with them and that you've got rust so soon.

I've had the Stillen exhaust for about a year now and the surface of the metal has become darker, but it's not rusting. Maybe because I live in Texas where there is no salt on the roads ever? There is constant humidity and moisture though. Stainless steel shouldn't rust, even if it's salted. The quality of the metal on your exhaust sounds questionable to me.

Can someone help me put up some pics to tie it into the post? Want to make sure others don't fall into the buying a inferior product and going to do as much as possible to make people aware of their service and products.

BBB complaint should be done by tonight

I had heard the same complaints with other brands made for the G35/350/fx, as well. I had a custom exhaust fabbed 3in stainless band clamped at the midpipe with a Magnaflow as a resonator and a Borla XL 3in in, 2.5 twin pipes out (like the stock muffler) to stock tips. I bought headers and a midpipe pre fabbed and just had the band clamp put in place of the flange. I've never had any appearance or rusting issues and the cost was no more than some of the branded items with suspect materials. .

I spent some time on the phone with the vp of stillen on this very same issue. there official answer is that the exhaust has a lifetime warrentee for rust through... perferations or holes, not surface rust. yeah, this is BS, I have 6 year old stock exhausts that don't look anything like the stillen looks after 1.5 years... bottom line is there using cheap crappy stainless, & there banking on the fact that most will never fully rust through & even if they wind up having to replace a few the money they have made & saved by screwing everyone will more than make up for it...

check out my $1,300 high end exhaust after about a year:

the exhaust I removed & threw in the garbage looked better than this.... the only reason to spend this kind of $$$ on a ss exhaust is to not have to worry about it rusting & turning to crap... what a joke...

It sucks that this issue keeps coming up.

I'm very lucky to be living in California where snow is never and issue and it only rains once every 5 months...

PC, there's an idea.
& I dont think any of these aftermarket systems are a true stainless cuz they would attract a magnet. Even the Nismo doesnt attract. Well, the Y does, but the rear sections dont.
A basic stainless steel has a 'ferritic' structure and is magnetic. The most common stainless steels are 'austenitic' - these have a higher chromium content and nickel is also added. It is the nickel which modifies the physical structure of the steel and makes it non-magnetic.
Chromium gives the steel its 'stainless' properties - essentially corrosion resistance. On the surface of the metal, a very thin chromium-rich oxide layer is formed which is inert - i.e. it prevents the steel from rusting. Stillen therefore doesnt coat their stuff either.

don't know about powder coating, but jethot coating would have been an option before it rusted, but that's assinine to even have to consider that when if it was made with a high quality stainless this wouldn't even be an issue to begin with.. I could see buying a cheap exhaust & then having to coat it but to buy one of the most expensive exhausts out there & then deal with this is just sucky...

Totally agree John

Just to compare, though no salt, so no real comparison, this is what mine (nismo) looks like after 3+ years.
No rust whatsoever, just thermal discoloration on the plumbing, but only on the parts I chopp'd in for the extentions

You have to wonder if They started with better product then after volume kicked in they began dropping the quality and upping their margin. I have bought two Stillen products, both had build issues and customer service basically said if they don't fail they should be fine. Products should not arrive (new in the box) with rust on the welds. you can make a name by selling into a niche market but by selling inferior goods eventually you will burn especially considering how connected we all are today.....i won't be purchasing Stillen again, too many optional parts available on the market today.

My Invidia exhaust was less expensive and the quality of the welds and the stainless looks excellent, I have only had it for a couple of months tho.....

I wrote Stillen today and here's the response. He used the same term, "rust belt" so it is probably the same guy.

Service Manager:

I'm surprised to hear about the corrosion on the exhaust kit. Our exhaust kits are made from 304 SS and the tips 409 SS. It's not unusual to find light surface rust on such a kit if you regularly launch a boat at the marina or live in the salt belt. In situations like this we recommend that the exhaust is regularly hosed down and polished with a quality metal polish to ensure the kit maintains its appearance. If you want to email me some digital photos of the problem, I'd be happy to forward them to manufacturing for evaluation.

Turbo - send some pics of yours in to Stillen and so should everybody else that has this issue. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, you know?

Hey Turbocad what did you do with the exhaust? Is is still on and performing ? or did you get it replaced. I have to admitt I only went aftermarket to prevent the rusting and with the prices Stillen charged we should have had top quality stainless steel?

So what are my options? Should i try rust removers or steel wool? If it comes off what can I apply to prevent it from coming again?

I encourage anyone who has had rusting on stillen products to file a complaint on bbb. Maybe we can create a storm:zip:

still on, I haven't had the fx on a lift in a while, but next time I'm under there I intend on beating the pipes with a pointy ball peen hammer, if I get penetration or see weakness in the metal then I will consider this more than just a cosmetic issue, but if it's just rust colored but still solid then theres not much more I can do really... maybe sand it down & paint it with a high heat paint to limit the exposure to oxidation, but tell me that won't look like an abortion, a painted exhaust system... just seems too ghetto to me... a painted exhaust, I may as well put a hood scoop & stick on fender vents & hang rows of tiny pom poms from my headliner...
