Researching which year to purchase?

I have done a lot of research in this forum about the technical issues that FX drivers are experiencing, which brings me back whether i should purchase an FX or not. I've noticed that the 06 FX35 have been having cold start issues and it is VERYYYY common.

Is it only for that year?

I am looking at the 08 models, has anyone have been getting issues with that year?

Also, does the FX45 have less issues than the 35?

you're right about buying the newer model. there aren't very many 45's out there, def not a lot of 45 members so the issue might seem less prevalent. I have an 05 and i haven't faced any of the problems with my car so the issues should not be a large scale concern.
 
I've also came across that FX parts are retarted. For example, if a part started malfunctioning, you would need to buy a whole part just for that one part wasting tons of money.

i vaguely remember a few threads on this matter but then i must repeat that newer models have been revised to take care of so many issues earlier models faced. the warranties on the newer models should also help you a lot. and as with every car....it matters how generous the dealership is. a lot of guys here can help you with that.

Primary difference in FX45 and FX35 is the engine as you know. As there were much more FX35's made vs FX45's, you will hear more issues on the FX35's just based on the sheer number of FX35's on this forum vs FX45 members.

I am too lazy to search for cold start issues as I've never had an issue with my 2003 FX45 -- but my dumb assumption is that can't you just get a better battery then with higher Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)?

I would assume Infiniti would continually improve and fix upon any issues with previously models -- and I believe mine was made in 2002 and is a 2003 model. So as "original" as it gets.

I've had no major issues and I'm up to 120,000 miles.

I would personally start looking at 2006 and above, just because they have better features like bluetooth.

What are your other options? I'm clearly biased towards the FX and wouldn't have bought any other SUV, 6 years ago -- or today.
 
I own 2 '05 fx35's (50k and 80k miles) and haven't had any major problems with either. One I bought new and the other with 22k miles.

I do wish that I had the color screens that all the '06 and newer have.

I agree with the '06 and up recommendation, also just a heads up that in (aprox) mid year '06 they went to bigger front brake pads. I think it was just the fronts, not 100% sure. Before that the braking was not one of the FXs high points.

I confirm they changed front brake pads but not the rear pads.

Braking has always been good in my opinion, even on the original 2003 models.

Braking figures were very strong with some stops from 60 mph being recorded in only 109 feet (subsequent runs couldn't duplicate this distance but did record only 115 feet — much better than most SUVs). Only slight fade was noted from the front and rear ventilated disc brakes. Front-end dive was minimal and the vehicle remained straight even under panic stops. It takes a hefty press on the pedal to activate the antilock braking system (ABS comes standard, of course), but overall braking action is progressive and easy to modulate.

Braking was good but not great, there was a review that faulted the FXs for mediocre brake response (sorry if that hurts someones feelings) the feel was mushy too. They don't increase brake pad size for no reason.
 
i would say go 06 an up bro... love the first gen but the updates and upgrades for 06 and up make it much better...

totally true... can put my hand in the fire for the FX here.. i think they fix that issue for the 06 and up..
 
Assuming you want a 1st gen, I'd suggest an 07 or 08, so you can get the updated interior and avoid the (possible) cold start issues. I'd also opt for the AWD version.

Try and get a catalog for the year/s that you want so you know what was available. They sometimes tell you that the car is loaded when it's missing something that might be very important to you. My wife was almost fooled into saying yes to an FX with no tech package (and no 2,000. dealer cash back!) and was very happy that I stopped the deal. The more options the better the resale value too......
