Replacing factory sub with a real sub

Has anyone used the OEM subwoofer location for an aftermarket sub? My wife drives an fx35 and I'd love to add some more bottom end to the system. The catch is that I can't use a box in the hatch as she wants all the space.

For those of us who have upgraded audio, where did you put the sub(s)? I've got a 10" Infinity DVC I'd like to get installed into her car.

Thanks.

I made my own box out of I believe 3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) and used wood glue, screws and wood caulk stuff.

I had to take out the spare tire though, and measured the area in there. You can be creative and have a fiberglass mold made and have a box to cover the entirety of the area the spare used to be, or you can just make an enclosed box like I did.

If you're having somebody else do it, it's gonna run you quite a bit most likely... if you DIY, I'd say ~$25-30 total, excluding all wiring, amp, and sub of course.

You might be able to keep the spare if you elevate the floor a bit. Just create a really long flat sub enclosure with the subwoofer centered in the spare tire. Or build it into one of the sides of the rear.
