Recieved my new Porter Cable 7424XP....Time to tackle these swirls!!

nice work aaron.

pman, paying for unnecessary body panels?? why not polish my cousin's commercial van and I'll even buy you lunch for the day :tongue (2):.

Tested these new pads today:

Don't mind the white specks. Thats polishing dust.

Thoughts:

As you can see even in the flash there are no swirls, marring, hazing, or micro swirling/scratches. These pads are the same as using a rotary/purple wool pad. Except these Surbuf pads are safer and the chance of burning the clear is 1 mil to one. The Surbuf Pad paired up with Meg's M105 will take out the nastiest scratches you can think of as long as the scratch didn't go down to the metal. Love these pads. Only downside is that you need to follow up with two more steps because of the hazing it leaves behind from the aggressive combo.

Here's my 3 step process:

1. Meg's M105 on a Surbuf Pad
2. Meg's M205 on a Lake County White Pad
3. 3M UltraFinishing Polish on a Lake County Blue Pad

MeguiarsOnline.com has a great instructional video. Make it look easier that it really is - it requires practice.

i bought one of these too. Used my wifes 2006 Sonata as my learning car. Still not great at it. Tough read on how much product to use and how hard to press. Lot's of practice needed beofre i would use it on my FX.

Also, don't forget that the second gen's have the self healing paint (supposedly). Tough to figure out the best way to do the FX until you actually do it.

Bought a Meguiars DA from a member here. Have not used it yet because still in the researching and learning phrase.

My proposed process is similar to Aaron's but with some minor differences. Any critique is welcomed!

(After wash, clay, wash)

1. Meguiars Ultimate Compound w/ Meguiars Polishing Pad - I choose this over the M105 as meguiarsonline recommended the UC since it gives similar cut/results to the M105 but is much more DA friendly. I might use the M105 down the road if the UC is not sufficient enough.

2. Meguiars M205 w/ Meguiars Finishing Pad

3 (Optional Step). Meguiars M-80 w/ Meguiars Polishing Pad.This step is to potentially achieve a darker/greater depth in the paint. Have not decided whether or not this is necessary yet. Want to see the results without this step first.

4. Meguiars NXT 2.0 Wax w/ Meguiars Finishing Pad- 2 light coats

Will report back once i get some hands on experience!

Good luck with it bro!

One thing I recommend doing it taking the time to tape all the trim and gaps up with masking tape to prevent splatter in the gaps. Trust me I learned the hard way the first time LOL.

2009's only have the self healing clear coat. Totally safe to polish though just a pain in the butt to remove marks since the clear is rock hard.

I have used the porter cable on my G and love it. I do have a question though, my gentle used 2010 FX came with the paint film on it(thank god), do you put anything on that or do you treat it just like paint? I have never had the Paint film so I am lost on that one. Also, I am claybaring my car today, would I also clay bar the film?

Thanks, MP.

Not sure if it's safe to polish clear bra film. It could also depend on if they used a good film or a cheap film. A good film would be 3M or venture shield. If you do polish the film I would use a lighter polish and less aggressive pad with less pressure and work your way up. Always test in a inconspicuous area first.

However clay barring the film is 100% safe. So no worries.

Yeah, After thinking about it, the film doesn't have clear coat on it so there would be no use polishing it(duh on my part). It is definately the "factory/dealer) good stuff. They even did the bottom parts of the mirror.

I just got the clay bar done and it feels smooth as a baby's bottom(I would imagine). Now I gotta get the buffing and waxing done before I take it out of the garage. Speaking of Garages, The previous owner definately had it garaged. The paint looks damn near new. I also had to take off the plastic over the infiniti logos in the trunk and on the drivers/pass door sills. Crazy thing is that I had to do the same on my G, that one was a blue plastic.

At least this qualifies for my exercise of the day :smug:

Sounds like you got yourself a gem there. Go the distance and it surely paid off :top:

Sounds great man! Post some pictures after your done so we can all see :smug:

Wow, that last coat of wax was simple. I still had daylight left so I snapped some pics. I still have to wipe down the paint film on the front and do the windows, but not a swirl mark on the car and only a couple mild scratches.

+1, these DAs make keeping the FX clean so much easier. Waxed the whole car in 10 minutes yesterday with the DA. Good stuff

Wow, that's one shine OB :top: What's particular about the Porter Cable 7424? Isn't any polisher would do that same thing? Is that just a preference? I have use a 10" Craftsman Buffer/Polisher for years. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-10-in-buffer-polisher/p-00910723000P

The Buffer you have will not remove much Swirl Marks. Its mostly good for applying wax and light polishing.
You'll have to be in the range of 5000 opm's or higher to get at most swirls.

7424XP is popular because it is so easy to use and practically dummy proof.
but yes as long as you're comparing apples to apples... it will be a matter of preference.
