Rear hatch wiper delete diy

Guess when I get motivated, I geturdun. Finished this mod in about 20 minutes.

Used the stainless steel cover and you guys are right - needs to be gloss black. Something to do tomorrow night. I was surprised at how easy the cover came off and went back on. I'm not worried at all about having to put it back if I miss it.

Did anybody else get fiberglass splinters? Even after showering, I can still feel them in my fingers.

Gloss Black is the way to go, especially with our rear tinted window. Few years without my rear wiper, and I don't miss it at all (well maybe a couple of times)..

Fiberglass. The hatch is a fancy schmancy fiberglass that they call something different. It's just a plain ol' fiberglass with a plastic-based epoxy.

To answer your question: Nope. I didn't get the fiberglass itch from doing this but I got it hardcore from installing dynamat or whatever. I worked with fiberglass insulation for about 4 years while in El Navy and hated every single time I had to deal with it and learned to avoid working with fiberglass like it was the plague. Brush your pant leg into it and the stuff finds its way right through your pants and onto your thigh, horrible.

But I would recommend using gloves whenever dealing with the inside of the rear hatch, fiberglass sucks.

did any1 manage to find a plug that sit flush with the window? I swear I saw a picture on the scene here where someone had shave rear wipers and the plug sit flush.
I'm pretty sure people have only used the plug I used and this other metal thing you have to silicone on for it to stay...this is alot easier and less messy

Look at the pics at the beginning of the thread

very nice. It looks a lot better, doesn't it? I chose the plastic because I ddin't have anything to cut metal with....

How about a pic of yours when the plug is painted Jumbo?

Always wanted something creative like that. Wish I could think about something cool AND actually useful. I always wanted one of those scrolling LED signs with pre-programed messages I could play through my back window, like "that yield sign was for you", or "please maintain distance", "get off the phone and drive" and then the standard, "IDIOT" and whatever else you can think of.

Of course it POURED on my way to work this morning (there goes my detail). Each time I looked out my back window, I had the urge to flip the wiper. Even before removing it I never turned it on and left it on - I always used the flip on/off single wipe. Might take me a while to get used to the fact it's gone, but visibility was fine. I started looking at all the other cars out there and it seems totally hit or miss as to what models have rear wipers. Most cars don't. Most SUVs do. Some models have rear glass more angled than ours, and some models have less angled glass. Most car windows are larger than ours as well. Just doesn't seem to be a good reason to have it on there and I definitely think it looks much cleaner without. I don't think I have any leaks, but can't tell without pulling the interior cover off again, which I'll have to do so I can paint the cover... tonight.

nice nice, welcome to the rear wiper-less club haha. but yeah like I said: throw some rain-x and window wax on there and you'll be good to go! the rain dribbles right off...
and you shouldve left the interior off for your test run...lol because if it leaked you'll have some wet padding back there:rofl:

1 day and like 20 mins haha...

the 1 day process is just painting that cap and letting it cure

and 20 mins is installing it, didnt know how to take that back plastic peice off so was stuck but JB talked me thru it haha..

yea when i was on the process of getting that damn plastic peice off on the back it was hard but afterwards looking back at it, it was stupid easy. just didnt put enough pressure on pulling the plastic off.

few pointers pull the the clip points and they will fling right off

Looks good gentlemen, very clean! Do you guys have to deal with any snow? I'm wondering if it would then be a PIA without the rear wiper. That's my only hesitation because there's no doubt that it looks much better.

haha Dopie it looks great!

I live in NY and go to school in PA...I hardly ever use my rear wiper and since it looks so much better without it I took it off. Snow shouldn;t be an issue because usually the wiper is what keeps it from sliding off! without the wiper there, turn on the rear defroster and you will be good to go....

You can't trust Seattle weather, no snow yet, frost today on Cap hill....... I have been driving without my wiper for two weeks to see if I can live without it, so far no pain. You considering performing the first Gen II wiperdectomy?
