Rare JDM Engine Harness Cover

Isn't a grounding kit counter-productive in this process? The Rare JDM harness cover is meant to hide wires to give the wire-tucked "look," but the grounding kits add wire clutter to the engine bay :confused:
 
Hah - yeah, I thought about the cover. We'll see how it mounts - I think that's going to determine the final grounding routing and attach points. I noticed quite a few redundant grounds in the bay - I could easily replace some of those with these kit wires. The kit wires wouldn't be on display like they are in front of the plenum, but they'd be seen by those that are looking. They are pretty much aesthetic anyway. I'd really like to get some more of the sleeving on them for the rest of my harness. The plastic on the OEM harness is starting to break down.

There are Japanese "Earthing Kits" out there, which is pretty much the same concept as USDM grounding kits. I might look into something like that just for kicks.

Yep - I have the same question, but I'm pretty confident I can make it work. Seriously this whole thread is pretty much about a cosmetic thing, so this is one of those things I'll probably be continuously tweaking when I get the urge.

I'm really making new projects for myself just to keep working on my car. It's what I think about most after the standard life stuff.:wub:
 
Z-1 sent me an email - the matte black and gunmetal should arrive at Z1 tomorrow (Monday). The polished aluminum should arrive a few days later. Good chance all orders will ship out this week.

Viet can't you make a write up or How-To tuck the wiring ...?? You have done this the most i gues.

Definitely not. ARC is a high-end brand. Everything they make is expensive like that. It might perform better than some cheap $20 can, but not $430 better!!!

If you read up on the oil catch threads, there are links to two or three different DIY oil catch installs. They are each a little bit different but do pretty much the same thing.
 
Not at all worth the money. The only reason people even get that one is if they compete in car shows; that's the only place it really matters. More points for rare and expensive parts. It's the same company that makes an $800 intake (just a pipe, filter, and heatshield like everyone else), and $100 oil cap. But for those with the money; it's a great part. Also, part of the reason the prices are so high is the terrible exchange rate right now for the dollar vs. yen. The dollar keeps getting weaker which means the parts will keep getting more expensive.

They filled a niche in the aftermarket parts... market. It's like the designer label for cars. Half of it is extremely ricey, but since it's $680-2900 rice, it's somehow excused. There's quite a few baller ARC fan boys who literally buy everything ARC offers for their specific model car.

I put ARC in the same category as a bunch of the VIP companies. Some of the VIP stuff is so horrible looking, but because it's made by Garson, or Junction Produce, or whomever, it's apparently cool. Nothing wrong with buying expensive "brand name" parts for the car, but when people buy it just because it's from XYZ company and "it's cool", that's sad. I mean, Junction Produce actually has their own motor oil. Not that they make it; it's just put in their cans and costs 5x as much.

Then again, it's no different than a $10K purse.

I've never understood brand name people for stuff like this. Usually it means higher quality, but for example, an intake tube? It's just a small piece of metal. I don't think paying $200 more is gonna make a difference.
 
Here's the $20 catch from eBay. I did have to mod the can a little - extended the inlet to the bottom of the can and stuffed in the stainless baffle material. I like the look. Should go nicely along side the polished JDM harness cover, STB and intake tube.

Speaking of that harness cover... it should be here by now. Z1 says "mid-october" delivery on the site and we're there. Hopefully I get a tracking number in my email any day.
 
Good idea on the leak testing - I have a compressor so I can do it myself with a little soapy water. When I re-assembled the catch can, I used teflon tape and made sure all the O-rings were compressed. What I'm not confident about is the fittings on that viewing tube thingy. I could just take that off and plug those holes.

Those grounding wires came from a local shop here in Houston. I have a thread on this kit - it was originally developed for a G35, but working together we are making an FX specific kit, with pre-determined grounding locations based on feedback here on IS.

The development is not quite finished yet. What you see in my engine bay is the G35 kit and it doesn't reach a couple of the recommended grounding points. I will be moving a couple wires when I send in the lengths and the kit is fabricated. Once we determine good fitment, several color options will be available and we are going to try to set up a group buy.
 
great. I'll sign up...!! Like the Tech / Metal look. need to figure out what color scheme i will finally go for but i'll keep my self up-to-date on your progress.
 
FedEx showed up late this afternoon.

It was a little bit tricky to move the harness so that the cover isn't pressing down on it. It's still not perfect, but I'll tweak the harness location to get complete clearance this weekend. It looks good though. With the painted plenum and the harness cover, it would just be silly to ever consider bringing back the engine cover. I love the look.

When I took it out of the box I thought it was really small. But I guess it looks like all the other photos once installed. I like the use of the OEM holes - the two studs that the engine cover used must be removed completely. Then the cover kit provides polished hardware to mount into those holes, plus one more hole on the upper plenum, behind the cover. It seems pretty sturdy.
